This is the *garbage* version
This has a very similar name to the good version, but this is *not* the good version, the good version is:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008U3OVHWGet *that* version, not this one. This one is twice the size, and is incompatible with many OSes.

Paired this with a raspberry pi to make a DIY avocent style serial console terminal server. There was just enough room in the case for the Pi and a step-down power converter. Now I can ssh to all my switches and routers without worrying about configuration changes.

Can be a little tricky sometimes but after initialized works great.
These units were installed in our test stands from the manufacturer. One had went bad and we looked at options but decided to keep the same setup and order again. We sometimes on start up have to individually disconnect and reconnect the usb ports in windows to recognize certain devices. But other than that it does its job quite well. This issue only happens on a software or PC re-boot.Have never had issues during operation.

Not meant for casual users
This is a good product for 'professional' use, but not necessarily a novice or 'casual' user. For one thing, it doesn't come with the required power supply. An engineering user like myself has lots of power supplies lying around, and the wide range of voltage means that many spares will work. For another thing, the installation is only semi-PnP; one needs to pay careful attention to the order of installing the drivers and plugging in the device. So, why do I like it? Because the serial ports are 'sticky' -- i.e., they keep their location in the Windows system even when disconnected and re-connected later. Windows has an annoying habit of connecting a USB-to-Serial port as COM3 one day, and COM5 or COM11 the next time. This can be a pain with several serial ports. Also, the box is very solidly built, and could easily take an occasional drop to the ground.

Five Stars
Works great and a lot easier to use than an old terminal server for managing consoles.

Great customer support
I gave it 4 stars due to the customer support. This "X' model does not work on Win 10. Should you need one to work on Win 10 get the "I" model.

Beware the lack of details for unit in this website description
Just received 4-port serial to USB adapter. As usual, Amazon waited a week to ship because it was free shipping, even though in stock.Unit does not come with an A/C adapter, it requires 9 - 32VDC, so you have to provide DC power toit either by buying your own adapter or finding the voltage somewhere, very inconvenient.Instruction manual is a bad copy of an old one I guess, maybe this is old device and they dontsell enough to warrant a real manual.Beware, manual says unit has limited functionality on Vista, this is the reason I ordered the unitas my old one does not support Vista. So I will try this one, but I am afraid it is same as myold one and will not work. Will update review when I try it.

Surprisingly rubbish
Having bought other StarTech products in the past I didn't think I could go wrong with this. Unfortunately it just plain doesn't work. The combined efforts of three experienced software engineers resulted in a big fat nothing. The drivers on the disk don't work (even if you've got a computer which will take the stupid small disk) and if you do manage to download the drivers from the internet (I didn't, but somebody else did) they don't work either. At least they're consistent. This will be going back to Amazon for a refund.

Great to Run Swim Meet Timing Systems
In our part of the world, swim clubs use a system called ARES 21 to provide electronic timing for swimming competitions. The equipment was designed in the 20th century, and requires RS-232 serial ports to connect to a PC, and good luck buying a laptop with a serial port in 2013.Some USB to Serial dongles don't maintain a consistent port number from one day to the next. These solidly built metal boxes resist wear and tear, always come up with the same serial port number in Windows 7, have 64 bit drivers, and are compatible with ARES 21 and Hytek Meet Manager for running swim meets. One caveat: If you have Windows 7, don't use the CD that comes in the box to install drivers. Download them from startech.com.
