A little too much about food, but nice photos
I like the photography but there's quite a bit about food in this magazine, something I've found with ALL travel magazines, and I'm not too interested in that. On the other hand, the writers sometimes explore remote places I've never seen and may never visit, so the magazine holds my interest.

Best Travel Magazine
I love this travel magazine. Every article is better than the last. The magazine includes articles about how to support local and minority-owned businesses while traveling, sustainable and mindful travel, and has just enough info about several specific locations’ bars, restaurants, shops, unique experiences to pique your interest. This magazine is so good I can’t put it down! I even subscribed to their podcast today. And - bonus - I’ve added 4-5 places to my must-visit list this week! I read a few reviews about the ads and how they look like articles, and I actually LOVE that. Finally someone is doing ads right - adding value while sharing how you can access more info if you want to! There actually aren’t that many ads compared with other magazines. I’m an official fan!

I hated to see the changes they were making and how ...
I started subscribing to this magazine years ago when it very first was published. I continued reading for a few years. At the time it was a new fresh take on travel with lots of interesting pieces on more obscure and real travel experiences. It has been downhill ever since.. they have become the younger sluttier sister of Conde Naste (which doesn't pretend to be something it isnt), inundated with ads that are made to look as actual articles, pointless snippets of travel tips for elites with no real meaningful content or thought. I hated to see the changes they were making and how they were no longer a source of travel inspiration for the common traveler, but a champion of elitism and the 5 star wealthy travel crowd. I addressed the editors at the time about my concerns of changes i saw and not only was he dismissive about my observations he said it was becoming better than ever. I understand the economics behind publishing... advertising drives revenue and is essential, but an entire magazine comprised of 75 percent advertising of elitism and snobbishness isn't my idea of progress. I will never subscribe or purchase this magazine again.. it is a waste of paper and energy to print it.

Not really a travel magazine
I was a charter subscriber to Afar about 12 years ago when it was pretty good. Dropped it two years ago during the travel lockdowns. Started up again this Spring with a really cheap subscription. Turns out that I paid too much.Something has happened to the editorial policy that turned a once enjoyable travel magazine into a journal of wokeness and anti-Western culture. Every single page is filled with screeds against tourism, cultural appropriation, anti- racism, anti-Capitalism. The last issue had a lengthy rant about Hawaii that could be summed up as "Real Hawaiians don't want you visiting Hawaii; Keep Out". I'm sure the advertisers are unaware of what a waste of money this rag has turned into.
