Hugh Grant, Dennis Quaid and Mandy Moore star in this hilarious comedy about living the American Dream. The TV show "American Dreamz" is sweeping the ratings, and everyone wants to be a "Dreamer." But when two scheming, hopeful contestants face-off in the final showdown, the audience gets an eyeful of on-air fireworks. The stage is set for the wickedly funny, no-holds-barred competition that is being called "a riot!" BROAD satire, but hysterical!
Hugh Grant is creepily diabolical as a Simon Cowell clone and Dennis Quaid is spot-on as a George Bush who wakes up after re-election to question everything about his Presidency - he even reads the NYT and "the Canadian media". The Taliban smuggle C4 into a TV studio by chewing it as chewing gum, and a "real American hero" (shot in the arm before he ever reaches his first Iraq post) blows himself up in the name of true love on national TV. A really fun skewering of television, the rat race that is made-for-TV talent shows, our somewhat(!) shallow society, fake patriotism, the Taliban, LA upper class life, etc., etc. if you're looking for something like Notting Hill, this ain't it! You'll feel differently about Hugh Grant after seeing this. Kind of like seeing Andy Griffith in Savages, ya know?

pretty good overall
It kept me entertained. Although cheesy in parts, it was pretty decent satire overall with some suprise twists.

An awesome funny movie.
Dennis Quaid as the President, come on haha. He is hilarious in this one, as all other actors.

Funny as it gets
Funny, well acted parody of American Idol and other talent competitions. Hugh Grant was perfect for the part of the sleazy, cynical and isolated host. Dennis Quaid was a kick as the dim light bulb but earnest US President, and the competitors preparing for the show were a trip. All in all an entertaining bit of fluff with just a whiff of reality to remind us of the silliness that is a part of real life in this celebrity oriented world.

Kinda' Funny
Loved the cast and all played their parts well. Lack luster from a comedic stand point. Only laughed once.

American Dreamz reviews mirror reality
These American Dreamz movie reviews by Amazon customers mirror the state of US politics (e.g., compare to the dysfunctional US congress and the diametrically opposed parties). Read through the reviews here and note the tallies when you have a few moments. They contain evenly spread and wildly conflicting opinion reflecting the spectrum of political, morale, and ethical beliefs in America. That this movie elicited such widely ranging, sometimes overly emotional, reactions is hardly a surprise. Very interesting....Anyway, if you haven't seen the movie, it's worth a viewing to check your own reaction, whether you like this type of satire or not.

Entertaining and Amusing
I am not a big fan of Hugh Grant and so that fact, together with the bad reviews this film got, meant I did not go to see it at the cinema. However I am so glad I got it on DVD. Maybe it's just my sense of humour, maybe it's because I have enjoyed The X Factor, but I found this parody of the t.v. show funny from start to finish. I was almost on the edge of my seat wondering if the bumbling terrorist who, by complete fluke, ends up in the competition will manage to assasinate the President. The final scenes, even while dealing with tragedy, manage to be hilarious too. I can see from other reviews that it doesn't appeal to everyone's sense of humour so I can't guarantee you will like it but I can only say that I found it very entertaining and wished the film had been longer as it seemed over far too quickly.

Dennis Quaid saves the film
The film is not the best but is livened up and made amusing by Dennis Quaid. He took what could have been a total wash and injected some life into it.

American Dreamz
WIERD film. A bit disturbing. Not funny at all. Not even a happy ending. (Sorry if I've ruined it for anyone!)
