Yes, it is marshmallows just spreadable. I am from New England and we love Fluffernutter (Fluff and peanut butte)r sandwiches.

Is it normal for the top of the tub to be puffed up and some of the fluff leaking from the top?

It is normal actually. From the manufacturer website, "Marshmallow Fluff expands and contracts with temperature changes. On rapid temperature changes it requires sufficient time before the internal pressure is neutralized. Cupping and doming occurs in the meantime." When shipped direct from Durkee, the lids come with tape around them for just this reason. Mine did. I wouldn't say leak, but mine were a b to open and there was some of the syrupy goo in between the lid and the top of the tub.

does it contain xylitol?

ingredients on label corn syrup.. sugar ..dried egg white...vanillin.....
