Her Best Move

Her best move
I initially watched this movie because I have been a fan of Scott Patterson, since he was on Gilmore Girls. I really enjoyed this movie because the main characters learned some very valuable lessons by the end of the film. She learned that soccer wasn't everything, and that she needed to enjoy her whole life, including soccer. The relationships she had with her Dad and her Mom were very realistic, and her best friend, her dance instructor, her soccer coach, and the new boy in her life, all added to her seeing that there is a lot to life, other than just sports, and you can enjoy ALL the different parts if you just take the time.

Soccer or a more balanced high school life ?
At age 15 the main character must choose between striving for the U.S soccer nationals or a balance between soccer and other high school activities. Good story which should appeal to teen age girls.

Ok, but not great
The movie was ok for a family film, nothing inappropriate. However, it was nowher nearly as engaging as Bend it Like Beckham, which was utterly charming and humorous. (Though perhaps more appropriate for teenagers and older) This was fairly standard and formulaic. I don't mind formulaic plots so much, if the characters and story are engaging, but this was not the case here. It seemed very uninspired, and the acting, I felt, was lackluster. It's fine if you want to watch a family soccer film with your young daughters and pre-teens, but don't expect to be bowled over by this movie.

Moving
I was pleasantly surprised! I've found that many of the movies for teen girls out there focus on appearance and send the message that a girl needs to be pretty and have a guy fall for her in order to be validated as a person. While this movie has a little of that, it is overall a fantastic guide, especially to tweens and teens, about rough times and decisions and how to deal with them. Themes touched on are sportsmanship, friendship, jealousy, apologizing, forgiveness, family problems, goals, timing of goals, the work that meeting goals takes, team work, etc.I debated giving the film 4 stars rather than 5 because the plot isn't exactly original, but a film that leaves me wanting to be a better person deserves 5 stars.

Disappointing
Looking at this as an adult, I found it very disappointing. 15-year-old Sara does soccer, dance, work, and school, then gets a boyfriend. This is the beginning of the breakdown in real life. Steroids, drugs or depression, or suicidality might also take place. And since the year of this movie, those problems are even higher in teenagers. Her dance teacher tells her to get a handle on life. And even the boyfriend tells her your life is moving too fast. And the one person who could help, her mother, just tells her to make the right decision for her. I am surprised she does so little to help her daughter who is clearly overwhelmed while being a family therapist. I skipped through a lot of the movie. And yes Sara got angry with the boy, and it was ridiculous that there were no consequences.

Her Best Move...Two Thumbs Up
Once soccer star Sara Davis (played by Leah Pipes),makes the competitive team, she is pressed by her father, coach (Scott Patterson), straining her relationship with her mom (Lisa Darr). In high school, with her best friend (Lalaine) , Sara meets school photographer Josh (Drew Tyler Bell), who competes for her time with her soccer. She must then, decide on her dad's hope of her making the U.S. National soccer team, or missing out on school, experiences, and her relationship with her boyfriend.

Worse than dumb: Protagonist dumps food on fellow student:
I had to stop watching when the lead character empties an entire plateful of hot, soupy food all over a fellow student at school lunch room. Her motivation was she didn't like what he said about her to his friend, and she overheard the conversation. Sure, what he said was thoughtless and not at all admirable, but, at what school in USA is it ever acceptable to dump food onto someone?I know it is fiction, but this old and tired and completely false trope is too much! There was no consequence for the "hero" girl and that is utterly ridiculous. What she did would have had any real student suspended from school, if not arrested for assault! It's supposed to be funny, not criminally oblivious! How am I going to like or root-for a lead character with that kind of poor judgement?I just didn't care what was going to happen after that. The total lack of common sense and common values is more than I'm willing to put up with. This is not "light-hearted fantasy", it it lazy script writing coupled with a non-existent sense of decency.
