Is it a mouse replacement?

No, not at all. It is used in conjunction with a mouse, in the opposite hand. It replaces the mouse and keyboard combinations often used for navigation in 3D CAD programs, but does not replace the mouse itself.

Does it work with computer games? (This is a Christmas present.) What is the return policy if they do not like it?

If you looked on the official website ( http://www.3dconnexion.com/products/spacenavigator.html ), you would have found that the device is currently supported by two games (Multiwinia and Second Life), not the strongest of games in the year 2013. Unless your child is likely to go into product designing or wishes to create his own computer games, I would not recommend this as his/her Christmas present.

Has anyone had issues using this in a Linux environment? I have a Red Hat Enterprise workstation that I'd like to use this one. Driver OK?

I used it in Linux Mint 15 and could not set the controls properly in one of the cadd programs. I think it was FreeCadd. All the functions worked, but were reversed from what they should be.
