Skeptic to Believer
I'm an experienced tank owner with a relatively new 140 gal cichlid tank with Fluval FX6 canister filter. My water started clouding up with free floating algae and my fish started acting lethargic. Water tests showed nothing but low pH, which I corrected. Numerous water changes helped, but couldn't clear it up. I trolled the web for solutions--so many opinions on tank remedies just leaves you guessing. And, I hate treating a whole tank with chemicals.I decided to try this UV sterilizer. Wanted a large pass through model to put in-line with my FX6--so I basically bought the largest pass through type on Amazon. The thing is massive and well made--many of the units with built in pumps look poorly made and I didn't like the reviews about electrocuting your fish. Since this product is not placed in your tank it is electrically isolated from your fish and the light is separated from the water by a glass tube (i.e. you can replace the bulb without getting wet). With this product, you need a large cabinet to secure it to--it comes with screws. Bought an extra Fluval ribbed hose and connectors and glued my own hose terminations to the cut end using Shoe Goo. Hooked it up and let it run. After 4-days, the tank is as clear as it has even been and my fish are noticeably more active. In terms of third-variables, I didn't change anything else in the tank--just added UV.Now that my tank looks good the question is whether I turn it off to save the bulb or keep it on? I think the only feature that should be added is a "witness" port so you can see that that bulb is on and working, because once the system is installed you see no light.

This unit really does the job
I had a U.V.S. that died, my pond water was so green I couldn't see three inches into it, I looked online for a new lamp and possibly new transformer, WOW not cheep! over $200.00 just to possibly get it going again,To replace it with the same one was over $ 400.00 bucks, I found this one ,it has more wattage and was so inexpensive I had to take a chance , I hooked it up and in three days crystal I had clear water, I can see all the way to the bottom 3 feet down, I am very happy with this unit and so are my fish !

good design with one glaring fault
The unit appears to be well built for the money, EXCEPT for the screw on hose adaptor. The adapter is made from a brittle clear plastic, possibly styrene. It looks like it could break easily, and according to other reviews that does happen. I got the 36 watt unit and the adapter was actually for a larger hose than the one I use on my Eheim 2217. I was able to fit a hose on by heating the hose in hot water for a minute then quickly pushing it on and securing it with a hose clamp. I don't know if the adapters from the smaller units will fit on the 36 watt unit. If so, Topdog should offer them as an option or sell them outright. He might want to consider making adapters out of nylon or another tough plastic and selling them as accessories, especially if he makes ones for various hose sizes. However, that being said, I'm considering buying a 9W unit for my 20 gallon tank.

works
ran out of co2 for my tank and had an algae explosion...never got around to refilling the co2 tank and just got worse and worse. i got this light for a 75 gallon tank and i think its rated for ponds so i figured it should work good. well it worked great. water is crystal clear no green tint and im gradually cleaning out all the dead algae thats in the tank...it just melts right off the live plants and glass as well as ornaments and rocks i have in the tank. took about 3 days to clear up my tanks water completely...still no co2 in use and my live plants are starting to come back now that they are not being choked off with algae..worth every penny.
