The Codex

I almost quit this book (GASP!) a few times, but I’m really glad I finished it despite the cliches, foolish smart people, and stereotypes.A satisfying adventure read.

Its been awhile since I've read a grand adventure but I have to say, I couldn't have made a better choice than to start with Douglas Preston's Codex. Full of mystery, intrigue, buried treasure, and harrowing adventure in a far off land, it gallops along at a breathtaking pace, taking you along on a journey grand in scope, and breathtaking in its presentation. Bravo Mr. Preston!

Douglas Preston has an amazing imagination and writes with a depth of talent few can emulate. Not only are his stories interesting, one learns things that grasp the spirit. Enjoy.

Ancient treasures, priceless works of art and precious jewels. The Codex, however holds knowledge that could change the world. The attention to details as we travel through the Honduran jungle takes you there with the assembled cast of characters. The wildlife, topography and plant life is spectacularly described. The characters learn about themselves as they try to find where their father has hidden his treasure and himself. As with every good story Mr Hauser plays his part well; avarice, narcissism and murder come easy to him. A very well told and entertaining story.

The book was a fun ride beginning to end. If you're looking for adventure and excitement, this books for you!

The books fine for a used book - But the print is so small it is difficult to read.

Preston is good, often more than good. I strongly suggest reading his non-fiction The Lost City of The Monkey God before delving into this, some of the subject matter is virtually the same but here we have proof of the old saw that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. The novel is a pale shadow of the real expedition into the discovery of the fabled “White City”. I recommend both, but Monkey God is a dazzling novel-like tour-de-force that easily Tops Codex in the adventure and excitement arena.

Fast paced with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. A couple of quirky characters, and even some feel good moments thrown in!

The book is definitely written with an eye towards an eventual Hollywood adaptation - one wonders if he was working on the screenplay at the same time, but that being so this is still an enjoyable mystery/adventure. Three sons find their father has disappeared (along with all his wealth!) and he's left them a video 'from beyond the grave' telling them he's hidden all his loot. The race is then on to track it down. With belief completely suspended, the action is fast paced and readable. A typical Douglas Preston romp

Wealthy man considers his sons to be wasters, and sets them a challenge...find the buried treasure..along the way the find a new brother, have adventures, experience loss and love. Slightly long winded, but a good read, with a happy ending...
