What tripod is recommended for this telescope?

You do not use a tripod for this telescope. It comes with a simple Alt-Az rocker mount. The design was created by John Dobson to create an easy way to do sidewalk astronomy. While the mount doesn't track objects, the StarSense system provides an easy way to find objects and keep them in view. That being said the only reason to use a tripod would be to do Deep Space long exposure photography and there are better options than this scope. But if you are really heart set on doing this you would need a mount that could handle the ~40 lbs of equipment (scope, camera, guide scope etc...). Something like the Skywatcher EQ6R-Pro at a minimum, but probably something meant for upto 70+ lbs of equipment like the EQ8R.

Can this be used for astrophotography?

See my photo of the Orion Nebula. That's about as good as it will get with this scope. Without a tracking mount it does not work very well. Getting a tracking mount that will handle this 10 inch OTA (Optical Tube Assembly) is net to impossible.

One question: judging from the size and arrangement it might be a difficult reach for my grandkids. Any thoughts?

The eyepiece is about 3 feet off the ground. And varies depending on where it's pointed. It should be quite convenient. A step stool might help for comfort. I often use some kind of chair, stool or rug to make it more comfortable to use the eyepiece
