Q: will this fit a mac book pro 13" with retina display?

I am using for MacBook Pro 13'', so surely it will fit for 13'' with retina display.

Not sure, I have a MacBook Air and that fits snugly.. what is the difference in thickness between theAir and the Pro- that might help you answer. Sorry couldn’t be of much help

Q: What material are the rings that connect to the varying strap made of? Concerned that the clips will break and drop the case.

They appear to be solidly made, perhaps a heavy plastic. If you are near a Best Buy, you can look at one — they normally sell them, but at a more expensive price. I checked them out at Best Buy and then bought them through Amazon. I normally use the handles and rarely use the straps.

Q: Will a Super Drive fit in one external pocket and the power charger in the other?

I am not sure how big a super drive is. I have an apple and the charger for my air does fit. I carry a few pens, and sometimes iPad mini along with the laptop.hope that helps.
