I love this book!
I had never even heard of Naikan until recently when I watched Gregg's 'Tricycle' Retreat. I became immediately interested in learning more about self reflection, so I bought the book and am so glad I did! This book is written in such a clear, concise way that it made it very enjoyable to read. It really has helped me turn my attention inward. The exercises have also helped me to be more appreciative of all the 'things' in my life from my toothbrush to my computer! And, as a results, I have developed a stronger sense of gratitude in my day to day life. I love this book and can see myself reading it over and over again in my life.

Feel Grateful in Troubled TImes
Don't be intimidated by the title of this book. Gregg Krech is a very practical American man, and he uses plain English and clear examples as he teaches his readers how to recognize the way they are supported every minute of every day by people, processes and products that they give nothing back to, not even thanks.Bridges, electric companies, air traffic controllers, the person in the next lane who does not suddenly veer into my lap... Without the efforts and self-control of similar people and processes I rarely notice, my own life would just fall apart!!So would yours! In a time of financial disruption like this, when markets and regulatory processes we mostly ignored have suddenly turned around and demanded our attention in painful and frustrating ways, you might find great comfort in learning to recognize how many OTHER things still operate to benefit and protect you. And you might feel much better if you learn how to appreciate and even deliberately participate in all this invisible kindness and responsibility that goes on, every single minute of our lives.Through well-written real-life stories and easy and effective exercises, Gregg Krech's book teaches you to feel better and behave better, and notice it happening.Wouldn't you like that, right now?Okay. Maybe not as much as your money doubling on the stock market. But maybe enough to smile tonight when you walk in the door. And wouldn't the people you live with be happy about that?

Small Book...Big Message
A great little book that can help you self-examine your life and the direction you need to go. When you are at a crossroad in your life, looking for the direction you need to pursue, this book can help. It points out areas that we need to be greatful and those we need to examine and maybe leave behind. Sometimes we don't make the conscience effort to reflect on decisions we or others have made...in order to grow and live a fullfilling life, we must examine what makes us responsible, productive and contributing adults in society. I think this book helps us do just that but it also helps us do it with decisive JOY

Great challenges and insight in a wonderful book
The simplest concepts are often the hardest to put into action. This book is easy to read, but if one actually works the concepts, does the daily writings, meditations, etc. , will find its full of challenging concepts that take discipline. A beautiful book that quickly gets to the point, but is not too simple, not data challenged. It embraces the concepts of meditation, and thankfulness in the Japanese origins of Naiken. Buddhist thought...without the religion. Perfect for those of us not in need of religions, but still desiring calm, peace, and gratitude.

An important aid in cultivating gratitude with grace.
This book offers a fresh and revolutionary framework for cultivating a profound sense of awareness and appreciation of how we are supported by others and the world around us. By encouraging us to note the many gifts we receive every day, Naikan practice provides us with a lens in which to take a broader view of ourselves within relationships on both small and large scale. I refer to this book remind me to notice the many ways in which I benefit from the actions of others while helping me to recognize that my behavior also contributes to the benefit or suffering of others. Gregg Krech illustrates this important practice through examples and quotations that have assisted me in expanding an awareness of my conduct and helped me to see the world through a more humbly receptive lens. For this, I am most grateful.

good advice for how to stop feeling sorry for yourself
If you read this book, you can find out what the three questions are that will help you to become less self-orientated and feel more connected to the supportive elements of the world. If you ask yourself the questions and answer them honestly, then you will change the way you see your life.I loved the book, and it's inspired me to start the practice. How very interesting to see how much people give me, and how little i notice it. How very interesting to see how little i give back, and how i can give more very easily and create a better world around me.
