Helck, Vol. 1 (1)

MUST-READ for any fantasy manga fan!
Helck is a superb action/comedy manga. It has the best friendship in any manga I've ever read, a slow burn into an excellent plot, great art (especially in the later volumes), superb character designs, NO "anime icks", and best of all, actually has a beautiful ending. Fans of Delicious in Dungeon or Frieren at the Funeral should absolutely pick up Helck.

Cute unlikely anti-hero story
Cute, funny. Good art. Usual manga problem of who the heck is talking? Would it K I ll them to point the speech bubbles at the person talking?Lady Vermilio worthy opponent to Helck, a human who wants to be a demon lord and just might be strong enough to do it.Chuckly, not laugh out loud. Good.

The start of an awesome epic!
From here it only gets better - better artwork, better action, better plot, even the humor beats keep coming! I read Helck first years ago, and I'm delighted to spend money on the translation now - the mangaka deserves it!

Extremely Disappointed
Helck is a great manga, and this isn't a review for the story itself.I was very excited to add Helck to my collection as im a big Helck fan who has been waiting on an official translation for a while now, but sadly after finally getting to order the first volume it's arrived loose in a weirdly big box and is noticeably warped and damaged on what seems to be pretty much every single page, even looking like it might have some kind of water damage on certain pages. The pictures I tried to take on my crappy budget phone can't really do it justice but it's not in an acceptable condition for a new copy to say the least.Very disappointing but hopefully I can get sent a new copy that isn't in such awful state and when I do ill change this review to 5 stars immediately.

Feels like a Japanese Parody of He-man
‘Helck’ isn’t a new series. It rand from 2014 and ended in Japan in 2017. It was pretty popular and ran for 12 volumes, even resulting in a spin-off and a prequel. Feels weird that it would only get picked up now, but thems the breaks. The first volume made me laugh quite a bit; chuckles though, not really laugh out loud type humor. Helck, the character, is a caricature of the broad-chested fantasy hero: big, dumb, and handsome. Not sure how the plot will evolve going forward, but having the series kick off with a tournament arc is pretty much the epitome of shonen manga. On the whole, the gags were silly, the characters were funny to look at, and I enjoyed reading it. I’m not sure this would be my go-to pick for a fantasy comedy, if I was in the mood for one, but I definitely had enough fun with it to want to pick up the next book (probably all 12 as they come out to tell the truth).

If One-Punch Man and Dragonball had a himbo baby...
I truly do not understand all the 3 star reviews on Netgalley. This was awesome! It's fresh while still hitting on the familiar battle royale tropes of Dragonball Z and the hilarity of One-Punch Man!This is the first volume. While I do believe that 200pgs is slightly longer than the average manga volume, we are still only in the first nine chapters. Of course no one knows what's happening yet! This volume did a great job at what first volumes do: we got solid introductions to our main cast of characters, got a sense for who they might be (Helck excluded), got introduced to the problems within the demon lands (enemies beseeching them on all sides, some more powerful than the humans, poisoned lands and a militia stretched thin), saw a few other mysteries (namely Helck), and I also got a great sense of the tone of this story. It's funny, action-packed and the art is so clearly drawn! I can tell exactly what is happening in every panel. And!! The art style is so pleasant to look at too!A hit out of the park. 10/10 stars. This is going in my January order for my library. I cannot wait to read volume 2!
