This tomahawk is a deal at Amazon's price. It is full tang and has a quality handle. The blade is on the small side but adequate for throwing, self defense, chopping down saplings and making tinder. It isn't overly heavy and has excellent balance. The blade came sharpened and a few swipes with the proper file made it even sharper! Like scary sharp. It is a serious tool. And it would work very well as a battle tomahawk. Plus............made in the USA!! The company, Estwing, has a stellar reputation and is known for somehow producing quality products in America at reasonable prices. Some reviewers pan the sheath but I found it to be well made and strong. I avoid Chinese made junk (if possible) so this purchase was doubly good. Fair price/quality/American-made. Way to go Estwing!! Thank you for keeping Americans employed and for making a quality product.

The Estwing Black Eagle Tomahawk is a great piece of gear at a great price! I rate items in accordance with the price I paid, and $35 for this hawk is a great value. The cutting edge was sharp, the spike not so much, which is better for heavy duty puncturing jobs. The entire hawk is one piece of steel, so the head and handle are not going to separate or break apart unless very severely abused. This tool should outlast most other hawks. The grip is Estwing's shock absorbing rubber-like material and is identical to that used on millions of Estwing hammers. They get a lot of use for construction duty, and with Estwing's reputation, you know this hawk is gonna last. The head cover is black nylon, does its job, but is simple and otherwise unremarkable. My only real complaint is the handle prevents this tomahawk from being as flexible in how you grip and swing it. It is more difficult to choke up on this handle than my other tomahawks, but they aren't constructed this solidly, or cushioned from shock as well, so there are trade-offs. If comfort, durability, and value are what you are looking for, then the Estwing Black Eagle Tomahawk may be the very best option available. Enjoy!

Good, solid handle. Comes with a sheath. I didn't notice that in the ad, so I made the mistake of buying a separate sheath.

This is an awesome axe. It's everything you could expect from Estwing. Be aware that the ends of the edge are rounded off into the axe just like their wood axes instead of ground to a point as shown in the picture. Expect to spend some quality time with a file and this axe to get the edge set back enough to bring the ends to a sharp sticking point. Also, the sheath seems to come from the Elmer Fudd school of design. Three separate snaps must be noisily undone to free the axe from the sheath's floppy grasp. One piece of one inch nylon webbing is sewn into the seam of the sheath's cotton edging top and bottom to provide a sort of belt loop. There are 4 oddly placed grommets on each side of the sheath where the whole thing was nylon zip tied onto a piece of cardboard for hanging display in store. I suppose you could lash this pathetic sheath to your kit with them using parachute cord. Don't be put off by these shortcomings, however. This is still possibly the best tomahawk I've ever owned and also the toughest. This is a nearly indestructible tool and an agile, well balanced weapon. It's the size of a framing hammer but the head is as light as a finish hammer. The whole axe, not the head, weighs 27 ounces. My wife, who is not usually into this kind of thing, wielded it effortlessly and played with it for about half and hour.

Best Tomahawks I've Ever Owned I've owned and used hatchets and tomahawks for 40 years, first as a Scout in West Virginia in the 1960s, in martial arts training in the 1990s, and in Iraq in 2003. Seen and used several brands and types. The Estwing tomahawks are by far the best of the lot. I bought two from Amazon: one blue, one black. The blue one arrived with dull edges that were quickly sharpened. The black one arrived sharp. I bought these for self defense training and for my job as an international urban search and rescue team instructor. Small hatchets are very useful during collapsed structure rescue operations. The Estwing tomahawks have the usual sturdy Estwing steel handle, which is a huge advantage if you use your hawk hard and can't run to a hardware store to replace a broken wooden handle. The head is light weight, very responsive in the hand during movements, and does not generate too much momentum. Heavy heads generate large momentum, making the hawk difficult to control, slow to use, and a potential safety hazard. You won't have those problems with the Estwing tomahawks. For self defense in places where you can't bring a firearm, a tomahawk is a proven, devastating close combat weapon. Amazon sells books that can help you train correctly: Dwight McLemore's tomahawk fighting books provide techniques and training regimens, and Allan Eckert's historical novels and history books provide real world examples. Put one of the Estwing tomahawks in your vehicle emergency kit to chop ice when you're stuck, remove small trees blocking the road after a storm, or for emergency extractions. Overall, the best hawks I've ever owned and used.

This is an honest-to-goodness, full-tang Tomahawk, forged along the lines of Peter Lagana's Vietnam Tomahawk with a "lightening space" for ease of carry and rapid direction change during any downward stroke. Be advised that these are forged from 1055 Carbon Steel and are prone to rust in damp environs. If you plan to leave yours in a car and/or truck, periodically wipe it down with gun oil or WD-40 to prevent it from corroding. The Nylon/Rubber handle is great for preventing blisters from being generated on gloveless hands. It also prevents vibration from being transmitted to the arms and resulting in premature fatigue. This feature can also help avoid electric shock if you unintentionally sever a live electric wire. The Tomahawk is a "breaching tool" and can be used to break automobile safety glass, as well as prying open a jammed car door. The head has enough mass for chopping through doors, yet can be lashed to a pack for easy carry and immediate access. The "Ballistic-Nylon" sheath holds the Tomahawk in a reasonably secure fashion and there is a belt loop on the back of it for packing it around that way. (The sheath is made in Taiwan and is okay, but a more "robust" sheath could be substituted for better accessibility). Time will tell if the sheath will "break in" and become more useful with the passage of time. This Tomahawk is a great "bang for the buck". I bought two so that I could lend one to a roommate. He has indicated that he would like one to keep, so it is likely that he'll be purchasing one to have for his own. I liked it so much, that I bought it twice! REMEMBER: This is NOT a hatchet. While it can be used for splitting kindling and light chopping, it is not designed to be continually used as a hatchet. If you want a hatchet, buy one. This is a Tomahawk. Buy it and use it as one. The design parameters are entirely different. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO "MAKE AS SILK PURSE FROM A SOW'S EAR"! Doing so will result in disappointment and frustration. For both the price and purpose, I highly recommend this Tomahawk.

Got this to accompany my use of mattocks in the field as a landscaper, gardening. While mattocks do 90% or more of the work as my main tool, 10% or less is used with a hatchet cutting roots in the soil. That said, I found hatchets to be awkward and heavy for most roots, so i bought this tool to be a lighter alternative in the field. Plus the tipped side should offer as a pick which most of my mattocks have, but larger than my 12" long Japanese mattock, and smaller than my 5lb Husky mattock. Now if only Estwing could make a rugged mattocks I'd be in heaven!!! VERY RUGGED little 16" axe... I'm paining mine yellow to be seen easily on the ground... Like all Estwing tools I've bought, this one is gonna last...

The paint job is not the same as in the advertisement pic. I expected a high quality powder coat finish, Instead it's thin, inferior and comes delivered with paint chips already... It looks like a bad job from a kid with a cheap spray can. I've been using other Estwing products for many years and this one is not finished as well as them. It isn't the Estwing quality we've come to expect. If I were to buy another, I would get a black one rather. Don't bother spending extra money on the crappy "camo" finish.
