Fantastic Insights and Tools
There are a lot of books out there about how to improve at one or more aspects of your martial arts training, but very few interested in how to just look deeply into your art and understand it better. Rather than rejecting the martial arts as the title might imply, this is a book about how to navigate the martial arts and how to avoid being burned by some of the more common problems that are out there. For example, the first chapter consists of eight questions to ask yourself about your martial art and your experience with it. They're not a true/false checklist, but rather a series of questions to get you thinking about how your training, school, club or association might be vulnerable to certain pitfalls. Later chapters explore different ways to tell if someone is trying to manipulate you through clever but flawed reasoning or outright trickery--a useful thing to be able to detect even outside of the martial arts. The author's no-nonsense writing style and entertaining examples make for a quick read. Highly recommended.
