The 1438 combines great style with functionality. Named after the famed Cornell University in upstate New York, this bag is one of our most popular. Combining New York style with a spacious interior, the Manhattan Portage Cornell messenger bag is a great choice for students and professionals. The bag--which is named after Cornell University in upstate New York--is made of high-quality Cordura Plus nylon, a durable, long-lasting fabric that holds up to heavy use through the years. More significantly, the bag offers 700 cubic inches of storage, with such chambers as a large main compartment, two zippered pockets under the flap, a zippered pocket on the side for your cell phone or PDA, and a large zippered compartment underneath the flap. The Cornell is attractive and spacious. Other details include an open flap on the back of the bag for easy-to-reach items and a water-resistant coating. The Cornell measures 13.5 by 11 by 4.5 inches (W x H x D), weighs 1.2 pounds, and carries a limited lifetime warranty. About Manhattan Portage There was a simple philosophy that Manhattan Portage set out to achieve back in 1983: "A Bag For Everyone." And twenty-five years later it is certainly ringing true. From Montreal to Melbourne, Osaka to Oslo, and Stockholm to San Francisco, Manhattan Portage's line of bags are indeed everywhere. Despite their sweeping global popularity, Manhattan Portage remains loyal to their NYC roots. This 25-year lifespan in the volatile fashion world, and in a town that embraces the designer-of-the-moment but does not suffer has-beens, is no small feat. Manhattan Portage has been able to avoid becoming another fleeting fad and withstand the test of time because their bags do. By innovating and expanding their line to accommodate the range of uses their bag owners' demand, the Manhattan Portage line has developed to serve all walks and runs of urban life. Whether you are a DJ transporting your spinning equipment, a cell phone-toting investment banker, a starving student hauling pricey textbooks, or a messenger racing to deliver documents on time, Manhattan Portage has a style for you. (Even if, like many New Yorkers, you fit into two or more of these categories!) With their red logo, 1000 denier Cordura nylon, Delrin hardware, and a style selection including laptop bags, messenger bags, backpacks, and more, Manhattan Portage bags don't hide and won't be going away any time soon. The emergence of competitors and innumerable imitators hasn't fazed them, but rather left Manhattan Portage celebrating this ultimate sign of trend triumph. Although Manhattan Portage has received press in The New York Times, People, Newsweek, and the Village Voice, their media coverage is not what has fueled their resounding success. It is their versatility, durability, and adaptability that has allowed them to survive the ebb and flow of mercurial fashion tides.

Nice utility bag
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. The Manhattan Portage Cornell Messenger Bag is a very well constructed bag. It feels durable because the fabric is tough. The shoulder strap is of good length. The bag is big enough to hold a 13-inch laptop (with a thin case) and a few A4-sized sketching pads. A 14-inch laptop will be too big. It's not padded for the laptop though. There are 4 pockets not including the main compartment. A big deep one is on the back, useful for holding frequently access items. On the side is pocket that's large enough to hold a phone - I put my MP3 player or pens there. Behind the flap are two more pockets, one small and medium sized. The small one can is good for putting miscellaneous small items like keys, pens. The medium sized one can hold a medium sized book - I put a 6-inch Kindle or camera there.Except for the back pocket, all the other pockets come with zips, including the main compartment. It's a really secure bag. Nothing's going to fall out of the zipped pockets even if the bag is upside down. This bag is not cheap but it's worth the money, seeing that it's going to last for a long time. You may want to compare other messenger bags in similar form factor:- Manhattan Portage Medium DJ Shoulder Bag - Manhattan Portage Medium Europa Messenger Bag (The high-res video and additional photos are available on my blog. Pricey but worth it
I got this bag in grey to replace a ratty old canvas messenger bag that I've had for several years. I wanted something that I could throw my lunch, a water bottle, an umbrella, and a few other things in to take with me to work that looked professional but at the same time could be casual enough to take along to visit friends or what have you. The material is super sturdy and I like that the bag has a nice structure to it. I've managed to fit the aforementioned lunch/umbrella/water combo in it along with gym clothes and a change of shoes, so it's roomier than it looks. I've walked home from my bus in wet weather and the contents of my bag (zippered closed of course) stayed nice and dry.I do wish there was a key strap in the bag in one of the compartments so I don't have to dig for my keys quite so much, and the phone pocket is a) too small for my phone/for me to fit my relatively-small hands in and b) on the wrong side because I wear the bag on my left. But those are really my only criticisms.

Great construction, easy to use, looks good
I went through a grueling process finding the right bag to come after my used-and-abused Dickie's bag. The Cornell Messenger really had everything I was looking for: single front clip, when everything has two clips (too many); zippered main pouch (a little extra security); and a back pocket for easily accessible items. The simple gray color works great for me, I don't need anything to garish. But I definitely think that this bag is constructed like a rock. I've really put it through it's paces for the last year and it still looks and feels like new. Nothing's come loose, nothing is falling apart. The straps are still solid, no threads poking out. Highly recommended for students, commuters, and young entertainment industry professionals, like myself.

Great build quality, tremendously useful
This bag has been amazing, It fits my macbook pro, my ipad mini and a notebook or two completely fine. Its been with me on my travels to NYC, the Adirondacks and a few other places, it has held up perfectly. The build quality is tremendous, it has no signs of wear and tear after all my travels through the big city, through the woods and from work to classes. It's very easy to clean and well worth the cost. I thought it was going to break many times and it definitely proved me wrong. Great quality bag from a NYC company.

Scratchy and stiff
I don't like the material used for this bag. I carry knitting and the yarn snags on the bag. The flap is stiff and unwieldy making it hard to get something out while standing. The interior is undivided and if you don't close the plastic buckle on the flap it rattles. I will be giving this away as soon as i find someone who wants it.

Great for laptops
I love this bag, but I only wish it had padding. I don't like carrying my Macbook in it for fear of damaging it due to the thin material. I bought a sleeve to cover my laptop for an extra layer of protection. Other than that, the bag is perfect in size and quality.

Perfect everyday bag
I was hesitant to spend so much on a bag - but it was worth it. It takes me from work to school. It is light enough and fits so much without looking like a big bag. I am petite and it doesn't drown me.
