How long can they go without being washed? I have a Yorkshire Terrier.

If you purchase Amazon Brand disposable pee-pads (average about 28 cents each) you can go much longer by placing them on top of this nice quality washable and waterproof pad. Also, look at 36” x 36” disposable pads for incontinence — and place one atop this washable pad. They are about a dollar each on Amazon site. That said, I have a POM. If I see that she’s urinated on this particular pad, I wash it immediately. But if I lived in an apartment w/out an in-unit washer, I’d allow her about 3 times before laundering it. But, make sure the waterproof backing is turned inward upon itself as it goes into the machine. I wasn’t paying attention to this, and the water wasn’t truly hitting the fabric upon which she had actually urinated. Side note: these are terrific pads your looking at purchasing. I own four of them. They hold up well. I dry them lightly on lowest heat. Then, I finish by air drying while hanging over a chair.

Are these scented to encourage the dog peeing? Or are these just absorbant?

They are not scented my dog just naturally pees on it. I would try it out it does absorb but I would buy at least another one to replace the dirty one and the dirty one soak it in water and baking soda for a day so the it can get rid of the urine smell

How do you get a 16 year old dog to use them?

My dog is 11, she has a pace maker, cushings disease and now bladder tumor. I’m really not sure I just put mine down and she goes on them. I do know that when you train a puppy, you can put a little urine on pad and they then want to go on them. I’ve washed them many times and are still working good. Good luck

Why aren't your supposed to use fabric softener when washing?

Fabric softeners coat the materials and stop the absorption of the urine.
