We gave this a good field test this summer several times including a continuous trip of 16 days camping in 4 states. I have to admit I was skeptical but this thing really works. We turn it on and set it on the picnic table (if the campsite had one) as we begin preparing dinner. After dinner we place it between our camp chairs for the remainder of the evening. We were not bothered by gnats or insects while the Thermacell was on and we were within 10 feet or so of it. Several times we would switch it off and watch the insects come right in. Turn it back on and you could watch them clear away. The relief from insects we experienced was DEFINITELY due to this device. We put it inside our ALiner pop up trailer for just a few minutes before bed to clear out any bugs that might have found their way in. That worked great. We never smelled any odor. You can sometimes see a small repellent mist rising from the unit but this was never a nuisance or a concern. It is also absolutely silent.There are 2 types of cartridges that will need periodic replacement. I was concerned about how long the cartridges would last but was pleasantly surprised. One repellent cartridge easily lasted 3 evenings of 4-6 hour actual usage. This seemed better than advertised. In 16 days we used the Thermacell 12 evenings. We changed the butane cartridge only twice. I thought this was pretty efficient. One set of batteries lasted longer our entire 16 day trip. Again, quite efficient. Great for camping and a small 15' trailer. I am not sure how this would work for a backyard barbecue where you need a larger area of coverage. Both cartridges are easy to replace. Once you get used to looking into the viewing window on the top of the device it is easy to see when the unit has been properly turned on and is functioning. It is very easy to see when either cartridge needs to be replaced. Overall this is a well thought out and very effective insect repellent. Lightweight, easy to use, completely unobtrusive and efficient. I would definitely purchase one of these again.

This product actually works. I'm not sure about the 15'x15' measurement, but I did notice a difference when using the item. The direction and speed of any breeze in the area makes a difference in that. I tried to place the unit where I would be bathed in the small amount of vapor/smoke emitting from the top of it. The blue pad up top is supposed to last 4 hours and I think that's somewhat accurate. What's not clear to me is if the blue pad 4 hours starts when you open it from the package or is that 4 hours of burn time. The package comes with 3 pads and one fuel canister. The light is nice and totally independent of the mosquito vapor switch, which is also nice. My one complaint is that there is not a great indication that the vapor is turned on. I turned this on and placed this outside for my daughter the other day around dusk and she didn't need the light. When she came inside, she just walked away and left it burning. The next day, the pad and fuel were exhausted, of course. I asked her why she didn't turn it off and she said "it was off". She associated the light with the vapor system. I think a small led on top to indicate that the unit is running would be a great addition.Also, it's smaller than I expected, but the dimensions are clearly marked on the site.

I LOVE this product! It actually works!!!!!! Our back patio is about 12ft by 25ft and if the Thermacell is on there are no mosquitoes!!!! It even covers most the yard directly in front of the patio, where my kids 16ft trampoline and their little kiddie pool is. Now if we walk to the end of the yard we are on our own, but most of the time the Thermacell has us covered!!!! In west Texas we have millions of humongous mosquitoes and for some reason they LOVE myself and my youngest daughter, even with deet bug spray we get bit, without anything her and I are covered from head to toe in bites. I have 2 young girls and we are outside everyday for most of the day. This thing is a life saver!!!! It comes with the pads and butane, my only complaint is that the butane doesnt last as long as I would like. That being said, the pads that are supposed to be 4 hours, we can usually get 5 or 6 hours out of them and the butane is supposed to last 12 hours and it does! But with my kids and dogs, we go through 1 butane cartridge a day, on days we dont spend as much time outside we might stretch it to 2 days. So for the fact that we basically live outside this is great not having to spray my kids down. I just wish they had like a 100 container of the butane refills, the best I have found is a 6 container, then we would be covered for the whole summer!!!

We got these for our wedding, which was (inadvisably perhaps) in a field at dusk in June in Virginia. Imagine how many bugs you would expect there and then multiply it by 10. We did a rehearsal of our ceremony the same time the previous day, without the lanterns, and we were so swarmed with gnats and other bugs we were basically spitting them out of our mouths as we were talking. But thankfully, the two lanterns we got worked beautifully for the ceremony, and we and our guests were not bothered at all by bugs!!!That was last summer, and this summer we've gotten to try them on the plentiful/aggressive mosquitos of mid-Atlantic summers, and they work well on that too! So great to have now that hanging out outdoors (with distancing and masks) is the only safe-ish way to see friends.They do work by heating the pad at the top, which sometimes emits a bit of odorless smoke, and I imagine they might not work as well if it's windy, but I don't know that from experience. In any case, I'm so grateful for these!
