I love my pillow so far and feel very grateful for it
I started university and moved into halls of residence back in September and, having crashed on sofas and floors for around a decade, I thought I'd save money and forgo the need for a pillow - just to sleep on a bed again was enough for me. It was, but I did notice I was looking more tired, haggard, and, although it was probably more to do with a change in routine and the stress of being up and out in the mornings, I wondered if a pillow would make a difference and take some of the burden and weight off of my head. I wanted something different, i.e. not toxic memory foam, not toxic polyesters or with dodgy, allergenic, chemical fillings. First I settled on a buckwheat pillow from a company specialising in those. That pillow was cool for a moment - novel, a nice idea, and I found it comfortable enough - but I started to notice considerable amounts of brown dust on my bedsheets from the buckwheat hulls within. I realised I was probably breathing in this fine dust and then made the connection to sore throats and congestion I'd been having since using the pillow. So, I returned the pillow for a refund and looked elsewhere. Cotton and wool are appealing 'materials' to me, so that's when I found this brand here -- WOOLROOM. I decided to pay a bit extra and go for the organic one to ensure for accountability and peace of mind, also hopeful that it will last for many many years given the nature of wool and products that cost a bit more. So far I'm very happy with it. As soon as it arrived I knew I'd made the right choice. The smell is so good that I chose not to air it 'cause to me it's natural and a source of comfort. For now I've left the pillow in its canvas carry bag, thinking it adds another layer of protection to it (between the pillow cover and the wool filling). The card / label that it came with was a nice touch, reassuring when I started to worry about the sustainability of wool and the condition and wellbeing of the sheep. It has a QR code on it so you can find out exactly where the wool has come from. I felt like I had the most restful sleep I'd had in years that first night. Things like this - cotton and wool, natural 'materials' - give me a deep sense of gratitude and I feel more connected to the Earth and to life and my place in it whenever I have had the luxury of wearing a wool coat or a pigskin jacket or keeping warm through the night with a wool blanket. I fall somewhere between vegetarian and vegan, but I'm okay with it. I feel as long as animal welfare and sustainability is put and can be kept at the heart of these resources, they are the best we've got for the health of the planet; not synthetic fibres, recycled plastics and chemicals that break down and are toxic to us and the environment. That's crazy, that's not the future. There has to be better ways of making use of what we have naturally around us. Having come into this world naked, both in prehistoric times and still to this day, we must have been expected by our creator or creators to hunt, forage and survive, and adapt to our surroundings. Other animals have been blessed with fur, thick coats, thick skin. Maybe us too at one time, but we lost most of it along the way. Hah. Thank you WOOLROOM. Much love.
