Perfect pour over coffee every time
This is our second Chemex Ottomatic coffee maker in 10 years. The first one lasted over 8 years before it started leaking. We have been using this one which is the newer model for almost a year now. It works flawlessly. We do clean the machine and the chemex every other month. But the coffee comes out perfect every time. Never bitter, just a smooth cup of coffee each and every time. If you are contemplating purchasing one of these it does make the pour over process even more easy and seamless than using a kettle to heat your water. Don’t get me wrong, we do own both an electric kettle as well as a kettle for our gas stove top. But… the Ottomatic is our preferred method for making morning coffee. If you are considering this purchase and you are a true coffee lover, you will not be disappointed.

Pour over coffee made consistent and easy.
The media could not be loaded. I do not regret this purchase one bit. It's one of my best purchases I've ever made. This is my first pour-over coffee maker. I'll admit that I've been using k-cups that I'd been buying from Costco for a long time. I was never fully satisfied with my morning coffee with that solution, but it was super easy to make and clean up. I told myself that using the k-cups was smart because I could make exactly how much coffee I needed without wasting any. But the problem was, I was always making 3 cups of coffee every morning. So I was creating a bunch of waste with those k-cups ending up in the landfill.I liked the idea of a pour-over, but I didn't have the room to store a kettle and I didn't like the idea of having to spend time learning how fast or slow to pour the coffee and having to stand there the whole time. I get it though that doing that exact process is for some the best part about pour-over. The process and the experience. Totally get that and support it. I just didn't think it was for me.But when I read an article about this Chemex Ottomatic and how it automated the pour-over process, I had to give it a try even though I thought it was a little on the expensive side at $350. Compared to some other automatic pour-over coffee makers though, the price is very reasonable. My morning coffee experience is so much better now. I pour exactly enough water for 3 cups (fill to the "6" line of the water container) and 6 tbsp of coffee and then turn it on to setting 1 (flip it towards you). That brews the coffee in about 5-7 minutes and then keeps the warming plate on. If you turn it on to setting 2 (flip away from you) then it brews the coffee and the warming plate turns off pretty quickly. The way it brews is great. The nozzle & pump lets out just a little bit of water at the start to let the grounds bloom and then it pours more water in. There are a bunch of nozzles in the head and some are on and some are off to simulate the pour over motion. It's so great. Watch the video that I attached. It's so cool.So you get the benefit of a pour-over without having to stand there and actually do the pour over. For me, that's awesome. I highly recommend the Chemex Ottomatic.

Just about the most perfect coffee maker!
The media could not be loaded. I'm not on the level of those who roast their own beans and weigh the grounds for precise brewing, but I am a person who grinds fresh daily and enjoys pour-over. I just really hate standing there pouring and waiting, rinse repeat. When my 4th Grind and Brew died on me, I was looking at the technivorm moccamaster. It was spendy, but seemed like it was what I was after. I had work colleagues recommending chemex, and when I looked into it realized that I'd have to stand there and pour over which was not my cuppa. I'm just too bleary in the morning to deal with that. But then I saw chemex had a coffee machine! This was the best of all worlds... It was pour over but I didn't have to stand there pouring. It had a hot plate so I didn't have to worry about my carafe getting cold. I already had a burr grinder so we were ready to go. Plus it was damn sexy looking, moreso that the technivorm. Now that I've had it a month and have used it daily, I can say I'm extremely pleased with it.The only two things that I wish it had are a beep when it is done brewing, and some kind of tab or grip on the reservoir lid to make it easier to open. But these do not in any way take away from my love of this machine.I ended up getting the 8 cup carafe separately on a lightning deal, and both together were about the same price as buying the 8 cup set up directly from Chemex with shipping. The paper filters are very expensive anywhere online, but I've found them at Williams Sonoma in my area for the same price chemex sells direct, also no shipping cost.I'm also experimenting with Coffee Sock's reusable cotton filter. So far it's great.I haven't tried a steel filter yet.

Disappointed—Poor Reliability and Warranty Support
I would strongly caution against this product. My Ottomatic stopped working entirely just a few months after purchase as it wouldn’t even turn on. When I contacted Chemex support, I was told to reset the machine, descale it, and check my wall outlet. I already use filtered water and descale monthly, but I followed their instructions anyway. Unsurprisingly, none of it helped. When I followed up, Chemex responded with this:"After careful evaluation, the warranty department has determined that, based on the information provided, the issue does not appear to be the result of a manufacturing defect and therefore does not fall under the product's limited warranty coverage."In short, they dismissed the issue and denied warranty service. I've never had a product become useless this quickly and with such little support from the manufacturer. Very disappointing.
