Did the molds you purchased smell of petroleum even after washing them?

Yes, they had a strong smell right out of the packaging. I washed in hot soapy water, and then filled the molds with water and microwaved as instructions say to remove the odor. The odor went away, and is not an issue.

Do these leave a flavor or scent on the baked goods?

I have used these a few times and have not had any issues. I can't speak for every one of them. But so far have not had issues. Just makes sure they are thoroughly washed before you use them to ensure a better product.

Are these half of a sphere - in other words if I made two of them and put them together would it be a ball or would it be misshapen?

they will create balls if you use a very thin layer between the two
