A Fun Twist on a Norse Myth
Vibrant energy throughout leading our protagonist, Gunhild, on a wonderfully colorful journey to find her purpose in a land full of gods. All of your favorite characters from Norse mythology make a stylistic appearance in this debut entry from the series’ creator. I believe Gunhild will be a tale worth following and this first volume is a great place to start!

Great read!
Gunhild is AWESOME, plain and simple. After having a vision of the world ending during Ragnarok, she strives to prevent it from happening, but no one listens to her because she's just a measly Jouton, BUT what if she was a god?If you like Norse Mythology, cartoony artwork, and bright colors, then you'll LOVE this title. Fred Tornager did a GREAT job with this one.

Energetic romp in the world of Norse myths
The titular Gunhild is a fearless, twelve-year-old fire jotun in the world of Norse mythology who strives to become a god and prevent Ragnarok, aka the end of the world.Gunhild has a feral spirit that makes her a joy to follow around. She's not afraid to punch a god in the face or eat a venomous snake raw and doesn't allow things like Fate or lack of skill stop her from pursuing her goals. The novel is fast-paced with a quirky, energetic tone that perfectly aligns with the goofiness of the characters. The colors and overall art style also match the liveliness of the cast. I'm not a huge expert on the Norse pantheon, so I can't speak to how their character designs reflect their original stories. But I can say their designs fit in well with the atmosphere of the story. Making Thor and Loki short kings was a bold choice that made me smile, especially since it's such a different vision compared to the gallant Marvel versions of the brothers. This is a great book for anyone 10 and older who love fun, lighthearted adventure stories or Norse mythology. I can't wait for volume 2!

Embarking on a Mythical Adventure
My 13-year-old son enjoyed the captivating world of "Gunhild, Volume 1: The New God?" by Fred Tornager, part of the Saturday AM TANKS publishing line. We were both drawn into the story, set in a universe where Norse gods coexist with humans. The protagonist, Gunhild, a 12-year-old Fire Jotun orphan, finds herself feeling out of place among her human peers in the orphanage. As Gunhild proclaims the arrival of Ragnarok and nobody listens, my son and I couldn't help but feel for her as her fiery determination to become a god was ignited. We eagerly followed her on her quest, where she meets Liv, the ship's cook, who becomes her sensible and reliable companion.Gunhild's larger-than-life character made her a delightful protagonist, and we both appreciated the art and storytelling, which were heavily influenced by shounen manga while retaining Tornager's unique touch. The fully colored pages made this manga visually appealing and engaging, particularly for my son, who was captivated by the vibrant illustrations."Gunhild, Volume 1: The New God?" is a must-read for fans of action, adventure, and mythology.

Nice premise, but...
I don't like the style of the inside of the graphic novel. It's a bit hard to read, especially since it's black and white. Everything just looks a bit crowded. But I enjoy that its based on Norse mythology.

Enjoyable start to new series
"Gunhild, Volume 1: The New God?" by Fred Tornager is a new series in the Saturday AM TANKS publishing line. What a fun read it was. It is set in a world where Norse gods are just part of the world. Gunhild is a 12 year old orphan. She's also Fire Jotun so being in an orphanage in Midgard with human children means she's not with her own kind. She's an over-the-top character which fits given that she's not really human.Anyway, she makes the announcement that Ragnarok is coming and she's promptly laughed at which sets her off. Literally. She's a fire jotun so she fires up. But she knows she's right about Ragnarok yet no one will listen so when she hears that Loki is also a Jotun and he's listened to, then she figures she must become a god too.The adventure quest starts up when she leaves the orphanage and meets Liv, the ship's cook. Every wannabe god hero needs a side-kick and level-headed Liv is great foil to OTT Gunhild.Honestly, I enjoyed it. I can see the influences of shounen manga but Tornager, the writer-artist, has her own style in art and narrative which makes it a fun read. Every page is in color. It'll be interesting if future volumes continue in color. I'm fine with black and white because it makes the color spreads really pop when they do turn up but I can see why this manga may stay in color. Whatever the case, I look forward to reading more of the Gunhild and her adventures.

A modern twist on Norse Mythology
Gunhild is a fun and easy read for middle graders and up who are interested in Norse mythology. The story sees 12 year old Gunhild, an orphan fire Jotun traveling to Asgard to try to prevent Ragnarok, the end of the world. Fans of Norse mythology or Marvel's Thor will be familiar with many of the characters' backgrounds, but for newcomers to Norse lore there are some explainer pages each time a new major character is introduced. The story is engaging and emphasizes teamwork among the characters in the face adversity. The pages are illustrated beautifully in color, and printed on thick, high-quality paper. There is some minor violence and language, but nothing ages 10 and up haven't heard before. My 12 year old daughter is enjoying reading this book.

Fun story
Gunhild is a 12 year old girl who is a fire (she has fire powers) Jotun. (Loki is a Jotun). She wants to be a god and at one point even tries to fight Thor. She's predicting Ragnorak and wants to stop it. She journeys to Asgard and we meet the gods on her way. I think this is a fun story with fun graphics. I think it would make a good gift. This is just volume 1. I'm not sure how many volumes there will be and when they are coming out. I want to know what happens in the next volume.
