Lovely rich Hinoki scent
I've found buying essential oils from unknown brands can be very hit and miss and often outright scams. That said, when I came across this product from a brand that was unknown to me, I took a shot on it for £9... I love the smell of Japanese Hinoki it is a rich slightly sweet and, in my opinion, masculine scent that has a great depth. This product claims to be 100% essential oil and whilst I have no way of testing this, my experience leads me to believe the claim - in which case, its also pretty good value. I bought this for use in a cold ultrasonic diffuser and am so very pleased with the result... its a beautiful scent that fills the room and a little goes a long way... will be trying others from this brand.

A unique woody and lemony scent that calms my mind!
Refreshing, warm and welcoming, Hinoki essential oil is lesser-known, but it packs a punch. Derived from the Japanese Cypress tree wood, this fresh-scented and cleansing oil has calming properties that make all who use it fall head over heels for its potent aroma. With a long history as one of the ‘five sacred trees of Kiso’, Hinoki trees are treasured in Japan, with its forests being highly valued, managed and protected across generations. The wood of these sacred trees has also been used to build temples, shrines, and baths across Japan, with Hinoki oil holding a special place in the hearts of Japanese citizens dating back to ancient times. A mix between the familiar, woody aroma of evergreen trees and a bright burst of citrus fruits, Hinoki essential oil’s scent brings about feelings of peace and tranquillity, Also, the Hinoki aroma differs depending on which part of the oil is extracted from the wood. Hinoki oil extracted from the branches has a gentle and calm scent that gives you a sense of stability. On the other hand, Hinoki oil extracted from leaves is very refreshing. Since purchasing my oil diffuser, I have been ordering several essential oils, each as precious as the other in terms of well-being and health benefits. I have never heard of Hinoki essential oil, and given its calming effects on the mind, I decided to get it for my bedroom and use it before bedtime. It has a fresh wood scent reminiscent of the scent of the forest. It is a soothing, refreshing, energetic, and gentle scent. It helps me calm and relax and soothes my rushing mind. It is a unique fragrance, one I enjoy very much, woody and citrusy. I was brought up next to a forest and played a lot there. This smell transports me back home with all the smells and sounds of that beloved place. I add three to five oil drops into the diffuser and let it envelop me. I am thrilled with this essential oil’s scent and calming effects.

Earthy, pleasant, but not as distinctive as I'd hoped
I’m using this essential oil in a diffuser and for aromatherapy, so I can’t comment on its performance as a hair growth tonic. The idea of a slightly balsamic scent sounded very appealing indeed, evoking thoughts of freshly baked bread and dipping vinegar on a cold Winter day, all very lifestyle-aspirational stuff that sounded very homely, and also something just a bit different. While the scent is homely, unfortunately it misses out on the ‘just a bit different’ side. I don’t really get the balsamic aroma notes very much, instead getting a more familiar smell that reminds me of varnished wood. It’s earthy, with a hint of heather. It’s a tiny bit sweet, and just a little bit chargrilled. It is a pleasant scent, but to me it is just a little too familiar, and reminiscent of the massive range of “gentleman’s beard oil” scents that have been very much in fashion recently. It’s old fashioned, and could at a push evoke thoughts of calm log fires. But it’s not very different. The oil seems to be of a good quality. It atomises and diffuses well, and it can fill a room reasonably quickly. The 10ml bottle and its dropper are the industry-standard sizes, meaning that it can be screwed directly into my diffuser without needing any transfer or mixing, which is a plus point (but true of almost all 10ml essential oil bottles I’ve found). I was drawn in by the atmospheric description, and while this is a good essential oil, I was expecting something that felt just a little more special.

Not a fan of Hinoki
I guess if you like Hinoki you'd give it a 5. Problem is I find it pungent. It has an acidic, aniseed'y fore-note, and no real depth. I'm sure as an essence of Hinoki it's very well prepared - but be warned, this is a strong fragrance that I don't really see a home for. It would overpower pretty much anything you put it with.

Very lovely oil
I really like this essential oil. It came nicely packaged and the bottle was good quality, with a good quality dropper. On the box it had the scientific name for the oil, which is really important. They signify a genuine therapeutic grade essential oil. The company are a genuine professional high class company, I did a little research. It has a description of the oils uses, on the box, so it's easy to determine what you can use it to help. It also have a lovely little message, which made me smile. The smell of the oil is high grade. It has a slightly woody, earthy smell with hints of menthol (this is just my opinion). Really lovely smell. It goes well with other oil of similar type. I did feel a little uplifted after using this oil in my diffuser. It's great to use alone or combined with other specific essential oils, to diffuse, use in a spray, an rollerball oil or even just to take some deep breaths of the oil itself, undiluted. However, please keep in mind, if using on skin, never use neat, always dilute with a base oil. Very happy with this, I feel calm, at peace and my mind is still. I'd definitely buy and and absolutely recommend!

Smells wonderful

I don’t know what was in the bottle, but it wasn’t hinoki. Instead of that pleasant woody smell, reminiscent of bathing in Japan, it smelt almost minty, without even a hint of wood. Don’t risk it.

At first I did t like this product. It smelled like mint to me. But after time either it has grown on me or it has evolved but now I can’t get enough of it. After I bought this, and initially didn’t like it I bought another brand highly recommended of Hinoki pure oil and I hated it. It smells like pine sol. That’s when I returned to Gya and fell in love with it. I like putting it in my hair. It makes me feel like I’m in a fresh pine forest after the rain.
