Q: Does this clip on like a carabiner? About how far does the metal clip open, where it attaches to your bag? Thanks!

Yes, it clips like a carabiner but the opening is smaller. It opens enough to easily clip it on a similar size ring but could be attached to a strap. I bought the clip for my wife to attach purse handles or other small bags with hands to her backpack when she travels. She attaches the clip to other rings on her backpack, it is easy to do and the small size of the opening makes it fairly secure.

Q: does it have a rubber surface on the interior to grip better?

I bought the straps for my wife and she said they have no rubber surface on the interior. She used them to strap a bag to her rolling backpack for a trip.

Q: How do you open the carabiner? Latch? Brute strength? I can't seem to do it.

At the top of the carabiner is a section that you push down and inwards towards the top of the strap. This opens the carabiner so you can attach it to your purse, suitcase, backpack, or whatever. Good luck!

Q: Is the strap circumference adjustable?

Yes, The strap length is adjustable. I just love mine and will order another
