The media could not be loaded.  Assembly instructions were crystal clear. When it suggests gluing the microphone and the speaker, you should do so, to increase the longevity and to improve function (glue not included; do not get glue on the speaker membrane). Also, I suggest securing the 9V battery (not included) with double-sided tape (also not included).On first use in the field, I could easily hear the bat's "clicks" In my location at the time, there was only one bat, but I could "track" it with the device -- the microphone seems to be directionally sensitive. This is great for locating the bat whose sounds it is picking up. You will not be disappointed by this purchase.Video shows the detector responding as two bats circle a tree at dawn.

We purchased this as part of a thank you gift for our friends. We have our own bat detector at home and absolutely love it. The concept is great, and easy to put together and use. You just have to follow the simple instructions on how to build it and then point it at bats around dusk to hear them. Super fun and interactive product for all ages.

I used my laser engraver to build a sturdier case (see photo) than the cardboard box that the kit comes with. The device would only pick up a very slight hum at two points in the frequency range, and we thought that it would not work. But last dusk, Benny the Red Bat, came out and was flying around for insects. We were able to hear a clear, audible clicking on the device while Benny was flying overhead.Maybe my wife and I are terminally nerdy, but building the device and then hearing Benny on it was very exciting. I think I will buy another of these for spare parts. I cannot wait until next Spring when more bats will be flying.
