Restless Natives [DVD]

Still a classic
Replaced a long lost DVD copy. This is still a great film with one of the best soundtracks on a movie by the outstanding Big Country. If you have never seen it then take the chance. One more time...the clown and the wolfman

I knew the film, so the review is standard
The film was known to me so I didn't really buy it for the content. Packaging, case, and quality are all fine. Value for money.

Brilliant film, much improved transfer, but one problem...
I discovered this film many years ago through the music of Big Country, who wrote the (excellent) soundtrack, and have owned it on DVD since it was released in that format. It's a wonderful film, well-written and beautifully photographed, with a great cast. Just the right mix of comedy and character - a "feel-good" film of the sort the UK film industry used to do so well. This new Blu-ray transfer has a picture which is noticeably improved over that of the original DVD release - much less grain, and a much clearer picture throughout; a very worthwhile upgrade to the original. The soundtrack is much the same - still mono, but very clear and detailed. However, there is one snag with the transfer - something that seems to afflict quite a lot of transfers and remasters, and that is the use of subtitles in the original. There is a scene in the film when the bandits are featured on a Japanese TV programme, with an (excitable) Japanese TV presenter talking about them. On the original this was subtitled so that you could understand what the Japanese presenter was saying, but these original subtitles have been omitted from the BD - even if you turn on the standard English subtitles, all you get is "man talks Japanese". This is a real shame - the Japanese dialogue is quite amusing, but only if you can understand what is being said!In all other respects, this gets a strong recommendation - but I do hope that the company behind this release can rectify this problem for a future pressing.

Charming film that entertains
I seem to recall seeing the late Barry Norman reviewing this on his BBC weekly series of ‘Film 85’ but never got round to seeing it. I was reminded of this by a total stranger outside a supermarket recently when discussing films we don’t see on the telly very much these days and so looked it up and ordered it from Amazon - and I was not disappointed. It has possibly a now dated plot, okay a bit corny, but it has a certain charm about it with some great shots of Scotland plus in the first few minutes a cameo appearance featuring actor/director/producer Bryan Forbes and his wife actress Nanette Newman. The extras are limited but feature an interview with one of the stars a few decades on and his reactions and memories of making the film. Overall a charming little film that had us entertained us on a cold evening in early October that brightened the evening up. 5 Stars - or as Barry Norman might - or might not have said - “and why not?”

Fantastic 'feel good' film, on a small budget!
I have been after this film for years!!! Finaly it's here, and it's just as good as I remember! OK, so I am a massive Big Country fan and that does make me biase, but this film just a brilliant romp from start to finish! You start off being introduced to two bored lads, who are stuck in the worst jobs they could have imagend, in the heart of industrial Scotland. They decide to suppliment there income by highway robbery but don't have the heart, or means, to use violence. After a shakey start, the continue to "hold up buses!" full of aging and non too intelligent American Tourists. During one hiest, one of them falls for the tour guide. Thus insues a tangled, but litte hearted and easy to follow, story of innocent minded crime and blind luck, as the two become infamous Highland legends in a Rob Roy / Robin Hood style. As the Wolfman tries to keep his sweet-heart and the Clown revels in the status of "Scotland 17th most wanted man", things start to go wrong, and the two struggle to keep there friendship.Finaly, good will out, and the two end the rein as legends, followed by the unworried Police and a Japanese camera crew. But as the film says "Is this the end, or just the beginning of the legend?"The sound track is fantastic and really enhances the mood. The scenery is breath taking and the acting is simply brilliant from the two star's in there first full length film.I just hope you will enjoy the film as much as I have. And if you want a reminder of the 'fell good' facter, look out for the Big Country ablum 'Restless Natives & rarities'.I'll see you just outside Glencoe, on a 125, with the sound track playing and enjoying the scenery!!!
