where does it go in the aquarium tank..? above? on the side? where is the whole to dispense the food?

It has to sit on top of the tank over the food hatch. The hole is in the front segment of the wheel and the food drops through as the compartment sliwlyturns over the hole. Tip: leave the lid open so that condensation does not clog up the food. I secured it with tape and set it running for a few days before we went away to test it. Hope this helps!

Is it suitable for outside ponds

No it isn't big enough, you need the Fish Mate P21. It is an excellent feeder though and the only one which allows you to feed a different type of food at every meal.

Is there free returns on this product if it doesn’t fit my tank?

Don’t know. Your tank lid needs a hole or a gap for the pellets to drop through. The machine is shaped like a sliced orange with segments. One segment has no bottom for the pellets to drop through

My tank doesn’t have a lid, how can I attach this?

The Fish Mate comes with two brackets that fix to the vertical sides of the fish tank so no lid is required.
