FREQUENTLY CALCULATES JOURNIES TOO FAR AND TOO LONG
Someone's lost the plot at Garmin, literally. This one takes me on much longer duration and distance routes than the Garmin it replaced:OLD GARMIN THIS GARMIN61 miles 98 miles1 hour 29 mins 1 hour 41 mins261 miles 331 miles3 hours 46 mins 4 hours 15 minsIt is set to 'fastest' route but there were no traffic hold-ups in either of these examplesIt's taken me on single track roads with grass growing down the middle (they may have been the fastest but one tractor would have changed that), tried to take me down a footpath, and when I entered 'Go to Buckingham' it repeatedly made somewhere else the destination. To go to map view you have to push a 'map' button that gives you two options: 'map' or 'cancel' - why not just take me to map directly!!!Volume is buried down in the settings menu - how much more helpful to just have a little button on the MAIN screen or even an analogue button on the case. You need to check with your phone sat nav or Google Earth for their routes and then compare it to the one Garmin calculates to make sure Garmin is calculating the best route. It just shouldn't be this way. Neither should you have to use an old fashioned paper map, like we have.It frequently feels like I'm having to fight this Garmin as I know the route I'm using (from my old Garmin) is often quicker and shorter than the one I'm being presented with. So, no, I don't trust it, like I did the old one.It just feels like someone at Garmin has got bored with the product, taken their eye of the product and moved on to something more exciting.Very poor show.UPDATE: I've resorted to using the old Garmin. Very occasionally it said it had lost power but I use the power cable from the new Garmin and it doesn't have this issue now. I keep the new Garmin in the car for emergencies but there's no way I'd use it unless the old Garmin broke mid-journey.

Wow.
Pleased with this purchase as normally buy tom tom. Love it that it's says clear instructions like "at next set of traffic lights turn left onto bridge Rd." So you always get the right roads before missing them as what could be "take 2nd turning on left". you may count a cul de sac as a road where the sat nav doesn't hence wrong turn gets taken.

I found a great product (but not by satnav)
I purchased two of these for my wife and my son and they are both really happy with it. I got it for the cameras and also for the lifetime updates which means i do not have to replace it in 2 years. Nice sized screen and good fittings as well. I have to say we are a Garmin family and much prefer their layouts to others. Good price for this one too.

what a disaster
what a disaster .first it seems garmin do not want business .the device can not be clipped out without unplugging the mini usb cable to put away for security .twenty years ago I had and still have a garmin nuvi with active mount allowing me to unclip sat nav to stow away (known as active mount )the company seem hell bent on getting rid of customers the variable speed notices is great .the device uses TELE ATLAS so the map accuracy depends on their mapping .and can send you down dirt tracks are they for real .another point the maps on my device will not zoom to show a picture of motorway exit lanes etc . for the above reasons this is going back as quick as I can get to the post office ( even the high end sat navs have inactive mounts if the manual is to believed ) have /garmin employed a team to degenerate their products

The refurb unit was great value
I couldn't quite justify this at the full price but a refurb option became available at a good discount and I snapped it up. The main advantage is the large screen, which is significantly larger than my previous tomtom device which was getting on a bit in age. This makes it much easier to operate the touch screen and much clearer to see the correct turnings, as you can zoom out a little to show more on the screen while keeping everything legible.

This is my third Garmin. The audio volume seems to lessen with each version but at least with this edition it can be varied without losing the route. Maybe it is because I am going deaf!

Very good satnav for the price
Very good satnav for the price. Clear instructions, nice clear display and accessories provided do the job nicely to keep it powered and in place. Not had any issues with it so far so would have no issues recommending this.

A Garmin map issue?
I believe there might be problems with the London (Barnet) maps this Garmin has. When I type in my home post code, it shows a nearby place but has no direct access to the area where my home is. I now realise why once when I took a taxi home, I was sent to that place nearby instead to my home. Hope the Garmin people can fix this issue.
