Very happy
I chose this particular radio as I already have a wonderful Roberts dab/cd player which has the most incredible sound but which lives permanently in my kitchen and is mains operated.I wanted a simple battery radio that is easily transportable and useable in a power cut! I also wanted one that does not eat up battery life - hence no dab. This one reminded me of my first beloved transistor radio (tranny as we used to call them) back in the 1960's in the good old days of Radio Caroline and Radio London and of doing my prep listening to the top 40! Happy days indeed. The radio arrived yesterday - I put in batteries to test it and I have to say I am delighted with the operation and the sound (someone here complained about the on/off switch being part of the volume control... well in the golden oldie days of transistor radios, this was the norm and I am happy to say this is not a problem whatsoever).I only had a short test as my husband decided to steal it away from me - he is going to wrap it up and give it to me for Christmas! It will make for a happy Christmas day for me :-)The short test I did confirmed we had excellent reception and we both thought the sound, both music and speech was very good. This is no super-duper top of the range piece of sound equipment .. it is a basic radio and it appears to do a fantastic job.I will return in a few months, once I have been able to play with the radio!I chose this one based on the reviews.. obviously I read the low-rated ones and I hope I will be in a position to say I have had no problems after extended use.Whilst faulty equipment is unacceptable, the reviews which moaned about the radio being lightweight.. well what do they expect for their money? So they have to use both hands to switch it on... suited me when I was a teenager and it suits me now! Bah humbug!Further EDIT... now 4 years late and my little radio is still going strong! I still have it on (quietly) most nights and change the batteries less than twice a year! It is a lovely little companion.. and although we have not had any power cuts since buying it (one reason why I wanted a battery radio that did not eat up batteries) I do not regret for one second having it. It is not for hi fi quality listening, it is just to have by the bed for the fun (and usefulness) of it!

Excellent secondary radio
This is a well built and solid feeling FM/MW/LW radio. I bought it to replace a dead radio which I use in my bathroom. This is perfect radio for bathrooms as it works well using 4 AA batteries - an optional AC adaptor is available. The band selector is straightforward, the power-on / volume switch on the side is well grooved and easy to turn to the desired volume. There is a red light on the top panel to show when the radio is on, so you don't waste your batteries. Reception was very good on all bands, even if the aerial is not the longest. The volume is excellent and as I listen almost exclusively to Radio 4, speech is produced with great clarity. I'd recommend this inexpensive but wonderful radio for anywhere you need one to be battery operated and don't require a more expensive and battery draining DAB radio.

Pretty.light and SO retro
I bought this model to replace a Panasonic portable that I purchased in 1989 for use in my garden shed...tried to get an equivalent from Panasonic but I just could not find. 25+ years is a pretty good life for a radio! It certainly beats the 3 digital radios I have had during this period which lasted an average of 4 years each ( Rubbish!)This Roberts radio is attractive, compact and wonderfully retro. The sound quality is very good, tuning is easy and its very light and easy to carry around. There is a socket for a mains adaptor but unfortunately no mains adaptor is included, so that's why its 5 stars rather than 6

Roberts R9993 3 Band Radio
Roberts R9993 3-Band Portable RadioI bought this radio after buying the other Roberts Classic R9954, that one I mainly use in the kitchen, this one is a fantastic little radio, and the sound quality is excellent. I listen to it mainly in the bathroom as small enough to fit easily, for a radio of this size, the sound quality is amazing and far better than the larger one ( different make ) I had been using before, which was frankly awful. I mainly use it on FM and find that for this model the ariel does need to be extended. Roberts, in my opinion cannot be faulted for the quality of their radios, and they are not that expensive, I paid more for a lesser known make, and the sound quality was AWFUL!! This one once set to a station, stays there, and does not wander. i would now never buy any other make as this is just perfect in every way, I cannot fault it at all and all for £14.99!! fantastic, thank you Roberts and Amazon, go on just treat yourselves, and happy listening.
