Does what it says on the tin
Easy to work out how it worked even before I read the instructions lol. The little pins are a bit fiddly to insert & you have to make sure the hole you want is far enough away from the current/actual time pointer when you try & get it in, ie insert pins in the on & off positions you require at an actual time well away from them. 1) set actual time by turning front with pointer until it points to it, 2) insert pin or pins to turn "on" into the INNER row of holes nearest the required time (if you want pinpoint accuracy, this is not the switch for you!), 3) insert pin/s to turn "off" into the OUTER row of holes, & 4) plug in & turn on immediately as the actual time pointer only works when power on. Had it few months & works perfectly.

Poor Quality -possibly unsafe - not like they use to be.
Bought as a replacement for a similar mechanical Timeguard controller that we used for 20 odd years. Upon opening the unit I thought wasn't so well made but thought I would keep it. I should've trusted my instinct because after around 60 days of use, I noticed the light hadn't switched on, I checked the switch and the switch had moved across, I checked the light switch - yep still on, so I tapped the Timeguard controlled and the light came on. Mmm, I then manually turned the timer switch and the light went off and at the next switch on time the light failed to illuminate, again a slight tap and it illuminated, I tried again but now the light failed to illuminate at all. The actual manual switch on the timer doesn't seem positive and so does not make a nice click-over to "on" position like the old unit. So my conclusion is that the internal contacts are not making contact correctly. This leads me to be concerned about the units electrical safety, in that, should the switch not make correctly then one worries about "Arcing" which would generate heat and could lead to a potential risk for fire. So I thought I would return it, however, due to being past 30 days can not return it through Amazon, I just get a message to contact the manufacturer. Called the manufacturer, and they were helpful but would only offer a replacement, I do not trust the product now so that is not an option I wish to pursue. I contact the seller, but they said can not process a refund it as it was distributed by Amazon, and I should go through them, I told him they will not accept returns or refunds past 30- days, unable to do through Amazon online, the system won't allow, so I am stuck with a product I can not return, unable to get a refund. I certainly do not want a replacement as I said because I do not think I would trust the product, after all, they are for auto-switching when you are not around. So I will have to find an alternative and I guess I just have to swallow a loss of £9.99 for the cost of the unit because there is nowhere to get a refund. This will now make me wary of my purchases through Amazon. The fact you can not speak to anybody or get some remediation for what is a faulty product is quite shocking. So despite all the great reviews of this product think very carefully prior to purchase, I wished I had listened to my gut instinct and returned it immediately on receipt and used the money on a different product.
