Q: Can I use it by itself with a midi controller?

Yes, but it works much better with the 5 pin midi. you'll probably have trouble getting to access all the instruments on USB midi, so if your midi controller has only USB midi, there's a pretty good chance it won't work well.

Yes, there are 128 GM sounds include guitar strings bass trumpet etc.

Q: I just plugged my new pianoengine in to charge it. the "usb" and "midi" sign lights are red but flickering. is this normal?

Mine does the same thing. Might be a charging indicator with the flashing lights. The unit works fine otherwise. I notice the lights also flash to the beat of the keyboard music when playing.
