5400RPM and plays nice with my Synology DS212j
I had a WD Green in my Synology DS212j (though not listed on their compatible website). After 5 years my Raid1 NAS volume went degraded so this was the replacement. The red WD are a good choice for home NAS as provide in theory a longer life before you have to panic about swapping out! It's nice, quiet, and cool, humming away, and if it behaves like my other WD Reds I use in work servers, it'll perform well for a fair few years of punishment.WD support is also industry leading. Using their online warranty checker on any failed disks usually results in the free issue of a replacement. Haven't used it much but definitely worth the extra few pounds.A point of note, it doesn't say anywhere I could see in the description or on the device, but this is 5400rpm.Update Jan 18- the other drive in my NAS went degraded last week so I bought a second one of these. It was unfortunately DOA but within 24hrs Amazon had another one at my door! Enterprise level Prime delivery. Thanks. Replacement works perfectly.

fast, silent and reliable
I bought two of these to go into a Synology NAS.These drives are specially designed to be used in a NAS.They don't get too hot so the fan of the nas can rotate at low rpm producing very little noise. They dont vibrate so the system stands still and quietAnd the are designed to have a longer MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) so I'm optimistic about their reliability. So far they are very quiet, very fast, and have absolutely no vibration.I use my NAS to store a lot of vídeo, SD and HD and no matter the bitrate it is always fast to respond.Having two of these disks in the NAS set up as a RAID 1 (mirrored array) also gives me at least some measure of data security in case of disk failure.Highly recommended.

Out with the Samsung in with the WD
The Samsung 1.5tb drive i had in my Synology nas was reaching a couple of years old, and i like to keep my drives fresh to reduce the possibility of failure.Having used Samsung drives since they were first released, i wanted something to replace it that was reliable alas, Samsung no longer make drives so i switched to WD.Once i cloned the partitions across i popped it in and all was good. The drive is cool and quiet which is great. However it wasn't until i was setting up a joomla website (i use the synology as the testbed then when good i upload to host) that i realised how snappier this thing wasOriginally i just thought it was the synology webserver which was underpowered, but hell with this drive its pretty responsive and no longer like extracting teeth. So overall very pleased, yes its a few pounds more than the green or blue, but definetly worth it i mean, whats ten pounds over 2 years?

Excellent Product so far
I hesitated buying these as I had read many poor reviews regarding packaging. There appears to be two of these products that are very similar on amazon. One (this one) is fulfilled and dispatched by Amazon, whilst the other is from a different seller. The price difference is about 50p. These ones came in very good packaging. The hard drives came in their own cardboard boxes, with plastic housing to stop them from moving about and were in static free bags. From all accounts the ones from the other seller come loose in a box. Both drives are now in my NAS and are working fine with no errors reported so I'm quite happy. Can't comment on the longevity quite yet.

A 7 months old today review
I just came across this in my order list and noticed that today is it's 7 month birthday so I decided to load up the benchmarking program named HD tune. 255 and do a series of health checks, temps and speed tests on it.So, To start with I'd like to point out that it's a 1 terabyte drive, In my o.s folder it states it has 931 gb's available. Thats a loss but from what I've seen that's sort of the norm, I mean I have two other drives I purchased for this build a 250gb ssd that allows me 232 gb's and a 2 tb hdd that allows me 1.81 tb, so my guess is that's the norm???Anyway lets move on. The drive is housed in a three drive holder along with the other two drives I mentioned and they have a pair of Corsair 120 sp fans in push/pull connected to there box. This 1tb Red is connected via the faster sata 3 connection. Now for the test results.HD tune 255 reportsBenchmark transfer rate min: 67.6 avg: 114.2, max: 147.2Access time: 20.3 msBurst rate: 171.2 mb/sThe error scan found no damaged blocks. The drive sits at 25' C and a 20 gb data transfer over to it did nothing to change that, that's roughly 4 degrees cooler than it's 2 tb Seagate room mate. It does spin slower though.Overall the drive behaves perfectly, I can never hear it and I don't ever get reminded that it's there, which is a good thing. As you can see from the speeds it's okay but I was a bit disappointed as the 2 tb drive I got is quicker even through the slower sata 2 port, But that's understandable seeing as it spins at the slower rpm and that's by design and not the drives fault.Overall impressions are very good. It's passed the 7 month period in perfect health so I can't give it lower than full marks at this stage. I'll update when and if required.

Cool, quiet and quick
Having given up on my Netgear NAS as old and slow. I took the plunge and ordered SYNOLOGY NAS with a single 1T hard drive. Ordered pm of the 3rd April and delivered here in Somerset on the 4th April. Sensible delivery man left the box in the shed, so was not subjected to having to retrieve it from the depot or wait for the next delivery. The drive and NAS were up and running and 3 pc's backed up by the end of that evening. It is quick, even from apparent sleep mode, and silent. There is more to learn about the NAS features over the coming weeks.Although early days, I am very pleased with its performance for what I need.

Excellent replacement for worn-out drives in my NAS
I bought two of these WD Red 1TB drives to replace two 5-year old 512MB drives, configured as RAID-1, in my QNAP TS219 NAS unit (also 5-years old). The old drives were showing SMART warnings so needed replacement. I replaced the old drives one by one and the QNAP NAS mirrored the data onto the new drives. No loss of data - well done to QNAP! The new WD Red drives work well - quieter and faster. The new drives have extended the life of my NAS and I will be able to put them into a new QNAP NAS when required. Great buy.

Fully met my expectations. Excellent NAS drive for RAID
The WD 1TB WDBMMA0010HNC-NRSN drive kit fully met my expectations. I bought this drive to make a RAID1 pair. The drive performed well in my home-built FreeNAS server and provided better network storage performance than expected without any glitches or issues. When compared with 750GB WD Black drives in the same server the RED drives appeared to give slightly better perforance in NAS. Maybe the NAS specific firmware isn't just marketing. For more, read on...I wanted to build a NAS server for windows sharing, iSCSI, and nfs sharing. I had an old 1U "pizza box" server with a core 2 dual CPU and 4GB of ram available plus SATA II (300MBPS) channels. I got one of the WDBMMA0010HNC-NRSN WD-red drives through the vine programs and I bought a second through Amazon to build this NAS server. This drive is the retail package. It came in a nice box with 4 screws for mounting and a little bit of very fine printed material which I didn't bother to read. If a "bare drive" is fine and you don't care about packaging you might want to consider another listing for the 1TB WD Red drives which may be at a lower price for essentially the same thing. The software I used to drive the NAS is the excellent (especially at the price) FreeNAS server. It installs on a USB stick of at least 2GB. My old box had several USB 2.1 ports, so no problem. I configured the drives in a RAID 1 mirrored array using software RAID (instead of the FRAID (fake raid) built into the motherboard chip set.I first built the server with the WD Red drives first and ran some casual tests with windows shares and iSCSI. Using windows network or iSCSI I could saturate my Gigabit Ethernet with no problem. Performance was not an issue. They ran great and I had no complaints over several days of use. This isn't too surprising as many NAS boxes use little Intel Atom processors.Next I did a comparison by replacing the WD Red drives with WD Black 750GB drives I had on the shelf. I didn't see much difference but I felt that copies of lots of small/medium files completed more quickly with the Red drives. Maybe the caching algorithm of drive was just better tuned for NAS on the Red drives.A plus is the Time Limited Error Recovery (TLER) which is an important part of drives that are designed for RAID deployment. And having a drive that is designed to be on 24X7 is great.I've switched back to the WD Red drives in my home-built NAS and I'll update this review as I live with the drives and report if there are any problems or notable excellence that stands out.Hope this bit of experience helps someone.Update: Dec 3, 2013I have recently gotten a Buffalo LinkStation 420 2TB 2-DriveNAS Personal Cloud Storage and Media Server In comparing my home built FreeNAS system (on old core duo hardware) with two of these drives to the LinkStation with 2 Toshiba drives was interesting. The FreeNAS system with the WD NAS drives (both systems with RAID1) ran about 50% faster than the LinkStation. You can check my review on the LinkStation for more information about my comparison. The LinkStation might be a better option to get diskless for a very low price use these drives inside it. The small footprint and low power make it an attractive option.Bottom-line it seems there may be something to the NAS specific firmware of these drives.

Platte Top, Amazon Verpackung wieder akzeptabel
In 2 Satreceivern waren Caviar Green eingebaut.

Ottimo HDD a piatti
OF INFORMATION SECTION ===Model Family: Western Digital Red (AF)Device Model: WDC WD10EFRX-68FYTN0Serial Number: WD-WCC4J4TY7F0RLU WWN Device Id: 5 0014ee 20c0ee683Firmware Version: 82.00A82User Capacity: 1.000.204.886.016 bytes [1,00 TB]Sector Sizes: 512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physicalRotation Rate: 5400 rpmDevice is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show]ATA Version is: ACS-2 (minor revision not indicated)SATA Version is: SATA 3.0, 6.0 Gb/s (current: 3.0 Gb/s)Local Time is: Fri Sep 18 18:17:50 2015 CESTSMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability.SMART support is: Enabled=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 16Vendor Specific SMART Attributes with Thresholds:ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 200 200 051 Pre-fail Always - 03 Spin_Up_Time 0x0027 100 253 021 Pre-fail Always - 04 Start_Stop_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 35 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 200 200 140 Pre-fail Always - 07 Seek_Error_Rate 0x002e 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 09 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1910 Spin_Retry_Count 0x0032 100 253 000 Old_age Always - 011 Calibration_Retry_Count 0x0032 100 253 000 Old_age Always - 012 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 3192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 2194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 107 106 000 Old_age Always - 36196 Reallocated_Event_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0030 100 253 000 Old_age Offline - 0199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x0008 100 253 000 Old_age Offline - 0SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error# 1 Short offline Completed without error 00% 19 -# 2 Conveyance offline Completed without error 00% 19 -
