Can this stapler staple 48 sheets of A4 paper properly?

There are two issues you need to bear in mind in using a long reach stapler. There is a third issue to bear in mind if you're trying to create a booklet.1) Strength of the staples. Standard staples will not work due to lack of strength. Generally, offices tend to use 26/6 which are good enough for a few pages. If you're trying to make a booklet, then you'll reach a limit very quickly. More sheets will result in greater thickness and that in turn will cause the staples to warp! In that case, try using the 24/6 sized staples as they are a tiny bit wider but significantly stronger!2) staples being long enough to fold properly. If you have too many sheets, their thickness as a wad may cause a problem. The staple legs may not be long enough to bend satisfactorily. Staples of size 26/8 which sport longer legs (8 means longer legs than 6) will help to alleviate that problem.Obviously, the number of maximum pages you can utilise without the staple warping, or the staple not being deep enough, depends on the weight of the paper.3) This issue relates creating A5 booklets from A4 sheets of paper. If you fold an A4 sheet in half, horizontally, you obtain 4 sides or 4 pages, from that sheet. You can produce a twenty-page booklet with 5 sheets of A4 paper. Each page will be half the size of A4; it's the A5 size. Obviously, the process is not straight forward, but that's not the subject of this query!If you have too many sheets of paper, when you fold them, the the top sheets will form the middle of the booklet. These middle pages will protrude outwards when the booklet is closed. If you cut off the protruding part of the booklet, the margins on those pages may look unbalanced. Professional printers can overcome the problem but us, lesser mortals may be restricted in what we can do to overcome the problem. Our best bet is to utilise as small a number of sheets of paper as possible and/or play with the margins at the document level.The Rapesco long arm stapler 790 is one of the good quality staplers for the purpose. There are others too, but a lot of cheap ones are not good enough. Is a 50 sheet stapler more efficient than a 25 sheet one for stapling 20 sheets?

It depends! For multiple sheets, you need a stronger stapler to force the staples to go through the wad of sheets to bind them properly.
At the same time, standard staples (26/6) may not be strong enough to penetrate the wad of sheets. In some cases the staple may just collapse.
You need a stronger staple, like 24/6. The smaller the first number the thicker the staple. You can also try 24/8 which is the same staple as 24/6 but with a longer leg, enabling the stapling of more sheets. For still stronger staples 
23/6 and 23/8 may prove more effective but perhaps an overkill for20 sheets.
Having explained that, the most important thing is to ensure that the stapler is compatible with the staple. Some standard staplers can’t handle the 24 or 23 size very well. Also don’t use longer legs than what your stapler can handle.

whats the minimum paper width this stapler can do? - I mean the edge to centre distance

This stapler has a moveable depth setter on it so your page can be inserted as far as the point where you’ve set the movable depth setter. Using this helps to ensure that all your pages are in sync so some won’t protrude after stapling.
The top ‘lever’ or ‘upper arm’ of the stapler is marked with a graduated scale in centimetres and inches, going up to 30cm or 12 inches. So you can set the movable depth setter to the depth to which you need to insert the page.
The stapler is attached to this upper arm with screws so it may provide further flexibility in setting the stapler itself to different settings along the same graduated scale.
I utilise the stapler to fold A4 pages in half, to staple them into an A5 size booklet. Printing on both sides of the paper, two sheets of paper give you 4 pages. I have created booklets of 80 pages l. Booklets of more pages can be created there are inherent problems with long booklets. However, even a 10 sheets (40 pages) has its own problems. The more sheets you have, the more the inner sheets will protrude outwards. You can trim the protruding sheets but that means you’re cutting off the margins. Not very attractive.
Plus, if you imagine an eight page booklet, on the first sheet you’ll have to print page one, page two, page seven and page eight. On the second sheet, you’ll have to print page three, page four, page five, page six. This way when you put sheet two on top of sheet one and fold the two sheets in a booklet form, the pages will be in the correct order for a booklet. You can then use this long arm stapler to staple the pages in the booklet form.
Some printers come with the ability to print your pages in a booklet form so all you have to do is to collate the printed sheets in the correct order and staple them into a booklet form. Some software have the ability to do the job and instruct the printer to printout in the correct order. If you want to experiment, it’s best to create an eight page file, with page numbers, and print that as a booklet to see if you’re using the correct settings in your software as well as your printer. You’ll save a great deal of time if you use a Duplex printer. Some printers have this facility to enable automatic printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. Such printers nowadays have settings on the printer such that if you printout a file with the correct settings, it’ll take care of printing pages in correct order to form a folded booklet. Hence, with a 30 pages document, printed as a foldable booklet, the first sheet will contain pages 1,2,29 and 30.
Bear in mind that if you print an A4 size page to fit into half the A4 size (for your booklet), the font will shrink and may not be easily readable. Hence, your original font has to be a lot bigger. Best to experiment to get a result to suit your taste.

do you get staples included with this? also how far does the paper gauge go?

Yes, you get staples with it.  About 40 staples to start you off.  Your best ordering a pack with it.  The paper gauge goes right the way to the back of the stapler.  I am very happy with my purchase.
