Excellent....
As someone who grew up when records and cassettes were the only ways to enjoy your own music - back in the 80's - it's really good to see that there is still a decent quality cassette deck available today from a reputable brand such as Teac...even though the cassette mechanism is no longer one of Teac's classic mechanisms from their best years as cassette deck and reel-to-reel manufacturers. The cassette mechanism in question here is from a Chinese manufacturer who has been making 'budget' mechanisms since the late 80's; Tanashin (sp)... however, these Tanashin mechanisms are strong and reliable, and built to a manufacturer's requirements, and this one is no different..... playback of a well recorded cassette sounds excellent. The CD player player incorporated into this deck is also of decent quality and sounds good and performs well. The only problem so far that I've encountered - and it's no problem bourne of this equipment - is from those newer CDs that are mastered so 'Hot' - loud and brickwalled......it's very hard to find a suitable record level when recording to cassette.... (for these CDs it seems like -01 works well on the record-level meter).... but as I say, that's not an issue due to any definciancy with this deck...... I've made many great sounding recordings from more 'normal', older CDs. In normal use, the FL meter is nice and clear, and informative, and the soft-touch logic controls for both CD and cassette are good and positive, and very quiet - operation of the cassette deck is fast and quiet. Overall sound quality far exceeds the rather questionable looking specifications...from tape, it sounds sounds very clean, clear, and open, with a clear and spacious high frequency - 's' sounds and cymbals are clear and not at all dull-and stereo separation is wide and spacious - it accurately replicates the original CD/master tape source. It is, rather expensive considering what it comprises, however, when the quality of the parts are considered - especially the quality of the cassette side of this item being a limited 'niche' item nowadays, then it still is to be considered good value for money. The CD player is of expected quality: good.... but the 'cheap' Tanishin cassette mechanism made to Teac's specifications, is surprisingly good - it easily out-performs the quoted specs, and sounds excellent..... any well recorded tape will sound good, as do all of the good quality pre-recorded tapes that I own. The fact that this deck doesn't offer any form of 'noise reduction' for the cassette playback is no issue....it seems to squash tape-hiss in both playback and recording without sacrificing any high frequencies..... playing back my old tapes and pre-recorded cassettes just shows how good and resiliant this cassette medium really is! A great CD/Cassette combo deck... And good to see a brand like Teac still promoting Cassettes...!

I should've bought this a lot sooner.
On reflection this unit is excellent value for money plus it incorporates the media making a revival. It has excellent build quality, the transport controls take a while to get used to but the remote covers everything so no real issue. It could do with tape position settings as none for chrome, plus it plays metal tapes, although doesn't record them. Add that and a headphone socket this would be the perfect CD tape combo. If you have a collection of tapes / CD's then this unit sounds fantastic compared to the only other options. Although there is now only 1 manufacturer of the tape mechanism TEAC have made the controls logical rather than mechanical. It would be interesting to see if this is their own mechanism.

Learned my lesson
Any decent used deck for $120 from ebay will play better that this thing. It is solid kit but sound quality matches elevator music in a Fallout game if you know what I mean. I've got rid of it as soon as I could. Currently using 2 Sansui decks and restoring the third one. This Teac could not match any of my decks. If it is a player you are looking for I strongly suggest Fiio CP13.

Invest in Cassette Now
Only tried the main functions through once, but am more than happy with top quality from both CD and Cassette Tape (through Arcam + B&W). Expect good reliability as I still have a TEAC cassette deck which still works perfectly after 30 years (unlike the Sony and Technics which fell by the wayside). Now fully equipped for the cassette resurgence which is inevitably going to follow vinyl. This is the only new cassette deck from a decent manufacturer available just now and I'm not sure it has been discovered yet, which is why silly prices are being charged for refurbished second hand models. Buying this could actually be an investment!

Not worth the money!
On the surface this seemed to be the perfect choice for playing cassettes and mp3 cd's. However it says it can convert cassettes to 128kbps by inserting a USB stick into the sckt and selecting the correct record mode. I tried this numerous amounts of times with no luck whatsoever. What company turns round and makes a statement that it doesn't work with all USB sticks! Teac should be ashamed of themselves. I tried to contact them which proved to be impossible.

Gutes Tapedeck: Meine alten Cassetten tönen wieder!
Darin mein neuer TEAC, fabrikneu. Auspacken wie Weihnachten. Rausnehmen, anschauen. Schönes Gerät! Anschließen - und Musik vom Band hören. Wat schön!

Grabador/reproductor multiformato TEAC
