Great device and an amazing seller
This review is as much about the Procyon as MindPlace. This is a niche product and, often, when you purchase something that you can't buy widely elsewhere, you're pretty reliant on how good one particular company is to deal with.I bought my Procyon about four years ago (via Amazon). I was stressed, couldn't sleep and I also wanted to help unlock some creativity too. I didn't know (and still don't know) the science behind the Procyon. I'm definitely not someone who'd have the first clue about how to develop my own program. I can only speak about the effect it had. This device 100% helped me get to sleep. Normally my mind races, but by focusing on the lights and sound, it directs your thoughts towards something else. And it's incredibly relaxing. I also found that the programmes that are directed more towards visualisation possibly helped with creativity. I began to have ideas again when there had been a slight dry spell. But, for me, the real magic of this machine was how well it helped with insomnia. My only niggle with the device is that the wires from the headset and glasses get terrible tangled at times. If a wireless version existed (perhaps it does?) it would be much more user-friendly. I also wish that there was a way of knowing what a programme did my just looking at the device (rather than having to refer to the manual). I know, automatically, which number to use for my preferred sleep programme - but I wouldn't have a clue what to put it on for anything else. Other than that, though, I found the Procyon great. For various reasons though (house moves etc), I put it away and forgot about it. I haven't actually use it that much over the four years I've had it, but I brought it out again recently because of trouble sleeping. I was in that spiral again of feeling utterly exhausted yet unable to switch off. And then I remembered the Procyon. And it worked! But after using it a few times, I started to get a terrible screeching noise through the headphones. I changed them for another pair, but it was the same. I assumed there was a fault, so I contacted Mindplace, just to ask for some advice. Their response was probably some of the best customer service I've ever experienced They emailed me back incredibly quickly and suggested trying to replace the batteries - but if that didn't work, they thought there was another unit on Amazon they could send me. Bearing in mind how much this device costs, the fact it was four years on (not within any warranty period) and I hadn't even asked about replacing the unit, this was astounding. As it turned out, it was the batteries. But, as a customer, I can say that Mindplace's response is the way to secure customer trust, loyalty, advocacy and repeat business (even though these devices aren't something someone buys ever other week, in future, if I upgrade or choose another type of unit, I now wouldn't go through any other company by them).

A lifesaver of a machine
If you suffer from depression - in my case reactive due to a bereavement - or chronic crippling anxiety and need help to manage it then this the machine for you. I waited and waited on a long list for CBT through my NHS surgery meanwhile living a half life of misery for six months. I should have booked private psychotherapy sessions but as any depressive knows just brushing your teeth becomes a major activity when you are in the depths of depression. Going cold turkey giving up Citalopram - my GP practice gave me the wrong tablets which I was unaware of due to blister pack being identical to the AD's -I had a terrible time but also a wakeup call and decided to be more proactive in my recovery - I'd had enough and after reading up on Mindfulness went off in search of the best way to go about getting the best help. I had two sessions of Hypnotherapy during which on my second session my Therapist introduced me to EFT -Emotional Freedom Therapy techniques -or Tapping as it is also known. This has transformed my life in reducing my anxiety to almost nil and should a situation present itself that may raise my levels I can tap away until it becomes negligible again. I mention this therapy in relation to the AVG machine because one has a bearing on the other.Using the Procyon and its various programmes have been a revelation. Getting off to sleep with the Night Vogage programmes means a stressless bedtime with no odd nightmares to disturb your sleep. I have never been able to silence the chatter in my head until now as the Meditative sessions allow me to meditate in a way I was never able to achieve. The Full Energy programmes help you focus on getting that extra jolt to get going and to get the best out of your exercise session. My life has turned around in the last couple of months and is better than it has ever been. No more escapism through alcohol , no more living in the past or miserable present of what ails you whilst engendering such a positive state of mind about the future. Bit by bit I have incorporated some not so gradual changes that have added up to life-changing ones.I had gained an enormous amount of weight but now I am doing the amazing 5:2 Fasting diet and have lost 14lbs in 20 days whilst building my fitness levels up using HIT -the high intensity training programme that is revoltionising exercise from spending hours in the gym to shorter more effective blasts of intensive traing coupled with slower recovery bits inbetween. I started out doing short walks in the fresh air with my dog and have progressed from there. It doesn't take long to see encoraging results. Slowly slowly catch the Monkey and before you know it every small effort adds up to a cumulative bigger one.Standard talking therapies such as CBT are good, practical and action based to get you moving again - Psychoanalysis will keep you on the couch for years working out how you got to where you are before you implement a plan to get where you need to be so I am not a fan, life is too short to wallow. Hypnotherapy -two sessions costing me 45 quid a go with EFT in the second session set me on the right path. The Procyon and regular tapping keeps me in good mental health. These were my starting blocks to implement the changes I have made to my lifestyle. I should also say that I am on NRT and haven'smoked a real cigarette since the 1st of January. Given that self medicating involves drinking and smoking and other substances to escape reality then it seems obvious to me that to treat the cause of such escapist/coping behaviours then you eventually treat the symptoms. Giving up the NRT is my next hurdle, but I don't see that as insurmountable. Giving up alcohol to one glass of red vino in eight weeks is enough of a triumph for me right now, well that and loosing 14lbs of ugly fat, (no I didn't cut my head off in case you were wondering).I should say that this is not my first foray into deep depression. My parents and three other relatives died together 19 years ago. It took me a few years to realise just how depressed I was and finally got Bereavment counselling. I was never quite the same though carrying a deep sense of sadness around with me that compounded my bereavement last year. All the steps that I have taken this time around have given me back a quality of life that is second to none. Buy this machine it will change your life.
