STEINER binoculars Safari UltraSharp 8x22 - German quality optics, compact, light, ideal for travel, hiking, sports and nature observation

I think this is an amazing buy. It is perfect for the purpose that we intended. My family loves to cycle on outdoor trails in Scotland, but I'm teaching my kids to focus on much more than just cycling. We stop regularly to identify birds, or just explore distant vistas. I have my trusty old Swarovski el 8.5x42 and my wife her Nikon Monarch 10x42. But I decided to buy my two daughters, 8 and 5 years old respectively, something smaller and easier to operate. So, when I received this Steiner 8x22, I was afraid that it's image quality would be far below than what the girls could view through our bigger ones. But I was pleasantly surprised. Yes- the big ones are superior in every optical aspect; but this tiny pair of binoculars deliver smashing images- for its size. They are sharp and clear. Focusing is easy and smooth. It's very quick "on the draw": You see something; you stop the bike; you raise the Steiner- and within seconds your objects jumps into crystal clear resolution. I ended up buying another one. And yes, daddy is so chuffed with its ease of handling and wonderful practicality, that he's ordering the 10x42 for himself. I;m sure my Swarovski wouldn't mind having a wee brother on the trail. The only criticism I could perhaps mention, is that it is not perfect for dark, shadowy areas. There the bigger, more expensive binoculars definitely outshine them. But that is just logical: Bigger glass will yield brighter images. But then again, for the purposes I bought these binoculars, that's not a big issue. We don't cycle with the kids in near-darkness. During normal daylight hours, these Steiners are just perfect: Small and light- quick and easy to focus. And worth every penny!

Delighted with these! Researched carefully before purchasing as I have poorer eyesight in eye than the other - I have macular deneration and wear specs for short and long distance. With these binos I don’t wear specs (unlike with my previous larger binos) as I can easily adjust for different sight in each eye. They are small and very lightweight but appear robust and are easy to hold without any shaking. I’m pleased I opted for 8 x 22 and not the 10 x 25 version as whilst I’m yet to try them on our hols in Africa, I tested them in our long garden spotting birds, butterflies as well as horses in the fields beyond in very clear detail. I am well-impressed with the colours and clarity and the excellent field of vision. Ideal for women, may be too small for larger hands. Provided bag a little larger than needed but I’m unlikely to use it except for storage.

I bought these binoculars as I wanted a small pair to carry in my pocket when walking my dog. I already have a pair of Nikon Travellite EX 8x25 binoculars, which are excellent but just a little bit too bulky to carry around in a pocket. After trying two "budget" pairs that had good reviews on Amazon but which frankly were not good (both had badly aligned optics), I decided to pay a bit more and go for these Steiner Safaris. I had read several good reviews about Steiner binoculars, and these live up to the reputation. The image is sharp, bright and clear with no noticeable colour cast and very little fringing, and the focussing smooth with good dioptre adjustment on one eyepiece. The eyepieces have fold-down eye cups for spectacle wearers, I wear glasses and find the binoculars easy to use both with and without my glasses on. The construction of the binoculars is good quality, and they are more compact than I expected. For the extra cost and bulk, the Nikons do have a slight edge over the Steiners, with a slightly brighter image.

Nice little compact binos. They fit the hand easy and 'feel' right. Image is clear and crisp. Simple nylon strap that comes already fitted which pleased me since it's a job I hate. If anything I'd say the 22 dia. lens were too small, but the price hike of £70 from the 22 to the 30 dia. is almost as much as the cost of the binos in the first place. Still a good little kit though!

The binoculars themselves are great. Clear sharp optics with great colour even in lower light conditions. If I have one query about the binoculars themselves, it is that the bridge is probably larger than it needs to be for all but the most extreme IPDs and as they don't fold all the way in, they end up not quite a compact as they might have been otherwise. But for the money, I think they are worth serious consideration.Apart from one big flaw... the bag is enormous! Probably 2.5 times the volume it needs to be. Surely the main selling point of bins this size is that you want them small and portable, or you would buy another model. So WHY undo that completely? I assume that Steiner have just reused a bag from a larger size but that is not acceptable even at this low pricepoint. Above you can see the size of the bag as compared with another pair of (cheap) compact bins. The cheap ones are slightly smaller, but very similar size. They can easily be pocketed. The Steiners not at all. Crazy.

Ordered December 25, paid extra for faster shipping as my last amazon order was not even shipped until two weeks after ordering, so did not want to go through that again. These are made in Germany, shipped from Poland and arrived December 31, before the earliest promised date. The binoculars are entry level Steiner and since I have not had any experience with the brand I was not sure what to expect. They are well made, and clearer and brighter than the Tasco I have been using, although not significantly so. Very happy at this price point and would buy again.

Nachdem mein Steiner Commander II 7x50 seit 20 Jahren gute Dienste leistet, für nicht maritime Anwendungen aber einfach zu schwer ist, wollte ich mir was Kleines gönnen, wobei die Qualität ordentlich sein sollte - für herausragende Optik habe ich ja noch das Steiner. Zur Auswahl standen- Steiner Safari Ultra Sharp 8x22- Eschenbach Trophy F 8x25 B allwetter und- Eschenbach farlux F allwetter 8x24 B SondereditionDas Trophy ist dabei 50% teurer als das Steiner, kostet aber dennoch nur die Hälfte des farlux. Alle drei Gläser sind wasserdicht, die beiden Eschenbach auch mit Stickstoff gefüllt, so dass sie innen nicht beschlagen können.Eine mehr als 8-fache Vergrößerung wollte ich nicht, da das Bild ohne Stabilistaor dann schon langsam das Wackeln anfängt. Wer ruhige Hände hat, kann ein 10er probieren, mir ist das aber zu wackelig. Damit das Glas kompakt bleibt (war für mich wichtig), sollte der Objektivdurchmesser möglicht klein, jedenfalls nicht größer als 25mm sein (für Anwendungen in der Nacht habe ich ja noch das 7x50, wenn es denn darauf ankommen sollte).Im Vergleich durchgefallen ist das billigste Glas von Steiner. Die Optik ist nicht schlecht - für den Preis wohl sogar sehr ordentlich -, fällt aber gegen die beiden Eschenbachs deutlich ab.Das Trophy ist etwa 1cm länger als das farlux und ca 70g schwerer - das Steiner liegt gewichtsmäßig dazwischen, ist auch sehr kurz, dafür aber einen Tick breiter. Die Optik ist bei beiden Eschenbach Gläsern recht gut, wobei ich beim farlux den Eindruck einer größeren Streulichtempfindlichkeit hatte. Beide Gläser bieten ein herausdrehbares Brillenträgerokular. Das ist m.E. besser als die umplappbare Gummimuschel beim Steiner, jedenfalls wenn das Glas abwechselnd von Brillen- und Nicht-Brillenträgern genutzt wird. Normalsichtige können das anders sehen.Farlux und Steiner lassen sich mE besser als das Trophy bedienen, da die Rolle für den Mitteltrieb einen größeren Durchmesser hat. Man muss so weniger Kraft aufwenden und kann besser scharf stellen. Die Gummiarmierung des Steiner Glases macht dieses auch sehr griffig. Abdeckkappen sind beim Steiner nicht dabei. Bei den beiden Eschenbach Gläsern sind die Plastikkappen nur lose aufzustecken, d.h. langfristig fehlen die auch irgendwann.Die Tasche beim Trophy ist die kleinste der drei Gläser, obwohl das Glas eher das Größte ist. Ich finde das gut, denn zum Rumtragen will ich eine kompakte Tasche haben. Beim farlux muss offenbar noch Platz für den eher breiten Tragriemen geschaffen werden, der zwar bequem sein mag, für ein Kompaktglas aber doch eher zu sehr aufträgt. Das Trophy kommt mit einer banalen Kordel aus - mir ist das lieber. Die Tasche von Steiner liegt dazwischen. Sie geht ist mit einem Reißverschluss ausgestattet, während Eschenbach auf Klettverschlüsse setzt - Geschmackssache.Ich hätte wohl dennoch das teuerste Gerät (farlux) genommen, da es das Kleinste und gleichzeitig am besten zu bedienende Glas ist, auch wenn ich optisch (ohne zu ausgiebigen Test) keinen signifikanten Unterschied zum Trophy festmachen konnte, wenn, ja wenn ich kein Brillenträger wäre. Beim Trophy ist die Pupillenschnittweite größer und das merkt man (als Brillenträger) leider auch. Das Steiner war insoweit auch ok.Fazit: das Eschenbach Trophy 8x25 ist für mich und meinen Bedarf das Beste der drei genannten Gläser. Es hat ein sehr gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis. Wer keine Brille trägt oder diese grundsätzlich bei der Beobachtung abnimmt, sollte durchaus mal einen Blick auf das Eschenbach farlux 8x24 werfen.Wegen des günstigen Preises und der sehr guten Bedienbarkeit gebe ich dennoch 5 Sterne. Wenn man weiß, was man für welchen Zweck bestellt ist das kleine Steiner ein sehr gutes Glas mit hervorragendem Pris-Leistungsverhältnis.

These are phenomenal binoculars for the price. They are light and compact while still feeling sturdy and well-constructed. They're water-resistant and fogproof, meaning I can take them for a hike in rain without worry. The design is ergonomic and very comfortable to hold, and is rather stylish without being garish. The eye-cups are also a very nice touch, allowing me to use the binoculars while wearing glasses. The clarity and contrast are exceptional. Highly recommend these!
