You'll get a new kind of superpower.

This is such a transformative book. It requires you to do the toughest thing though... be honest with yourself. Kelly McGonigal does an incredible job of explaining how our brain works, and why we have these feelings and how to identfy them.In the grand scheme of humanity, the modern society we live in now has only just been invented, and so most of the things our brain does, isn't necessarily required in todays world, but there it is, all still happening. When you first fully understand that neuro-marketing is real, and then how they do it and how your brain responds to such inmputs, this book will kind of give you a superpower... improved willpower, and the ability to get sh*t done. You'll need to actively practice, read and review and you will build the habit and strengthen your willlpower muscle.Knowledge *is* power, and will you be a total Willpower god after reading this? Of course not, but you will have the blueprint to improve it. Stopping the "I've been good, so I'll be bad" mindset is worth the price of the book alone, I challenge anyone to read it and not identify some part of themselves in this book, and then think "Oh yeah, I do that... all the time!"If you're about to take on a tough challenge of any kind, or want to change the way you think or just generally have more control over the things you do (like stopping doom scrolling on social media), this book along with Mindset by Carol Dweck are the two best books I can recommend.Since reading these books (and a few more), in the last two years I've gone from being an uneducated overweight and ignorant estate agent that was blaming everyone else for my own failures, to a rock climbing (not overweight) self taught software engineer working for a Silicon Valley tech company, who can recognise failures, own them, and do something about them. This book is the icing on the cake, and I'll forever recommend it to anyone who wants more freedom in their life.

Excellent combination of science-based views and handy tips

A superb summary of the latest research findings in neurophysiology and social psychology for regular people. Presented in ten chapters/lectures with real-life examples, jokes and practical tips and exercises in the end of each chapter. The book focuses on willpower, motivation, how to stay on track and not get distracted, how our choices and decisions are made through interaction of our different multiple selves. The concept of our "two brains" - one, impulsive "fight-flight" and "grab what you can", shaped by survival of our wild ancestors, and another, social, goal-oriented, analythical, Homo sapiens' latest acquisition, can explain a lot in behaviour of oneself and people around. The book makes you think and, in addition, is a pleasure to read. I could do with fewer examples on excessive shopping (this is an American book, after all), but the author also examines the other problems, addictions and distractions (excessive eating, smoking, internet), and one can easily apply the workings to anything one would like to take control of.

Inspiring science

Lots of studies on the subject of willpower are explained in a friendly and easy to understand manner by Kelly McGonigal. The book works well as a self-help manual for building up willpower and overcoming our worst habits and self-defeating behaviours. There are some really surprising and thought-provoking findings which I'm starting to put into use to work on my own problems with procrastination and making bad food choices.

Beware - this is an exact copy of her previous book Maximum Willpower

I am a great fan of Kelly McGonigal and have her other books. I was therefore disappointed to find that this is an EXACT copy of her previous book Maximum Willpower.I feel that this rip-off by the publishers in simply renaming an existing book (without mentioning it in the description) does a great disservice to Kelly and her work. Otherwise, the content of either this book or Maximum Willpower (of which it is a direct copy) would be worth 5 stars.

A great help

I love this book. Each chapter covers a different aspect of willpower with exercises to test on yourself to see if it helps you to improve your willpower. There is humour in the book and it is easy to follow. Highly recommend this to anyone struggling to achieve their goal.

A must read to train yourself to control yourself

I enjoyed the structure of the book alot especially the section with the will-power challenge experiments and the summary sections with the main points. There's so much intriguing information that it really helped to have these summary sections to remind you of the most important points. The many scientific studies described in the book were really the icing on the cake for me. It helped me believe that the strategies proposed by the author were not just opinions. It was a good read and I am adopting a few strategies especially self-awareness and surfing the urge!Thank you Dr. Kelly

AWESOME..MISS McGonigal..Your research kind of reverberates with me..

A marvellous explanation of how willpower is important and how and why it fails..But an unintentional mistake is the parallels drawn between low blood sugar and diabetes; that a diabetic's brain cant use glucose because of insulin resistance..Brain uses glucose independent of insulin, So diabetes doesnt lessen the usagecof glucose by brain..( see Guyton & Hall ..CNS chapter)..
