Severin 117803 Popcorn Maker modified a bit for coffee roasting
Peleep's review convinced me, along with, probably, the same Youtube videos that convinced him/her, that this was the one to go for to roast coffee with. It works perfectly.Started roasting with the lid and cup in place. After a couple of roasts I noticed some frosting in odd places on the lid and the cup was being deformed by the heat. It occurred to me that if the heat was largely deflected away from the lid it might withstand the heat better. I therefore constructed from an Old Speckled Hen beer can a rather Heath Robinson arrangement. The first try worked quite well but needed an additional deflector which was stapled on and finally a third fixed in the same way. This, of course, was a prototype but it is quite plain that I'll never get around to making a neater version because this one works very well despite being a bit off centre and asymmetrical. Using a beer can is very handy since you only need a pair of scissors and an ordinary office stapler to make the bits. The lid has slots in just the right places for passing tabs through to fix the deflector in place.I've done a dozen roasts now, the longest 8½ minutes, just into second crack with Columbian Supremo, and you can see the state of the lid in the photos. The damage was done before the mods. So thanks Peleep, it's a fantastic coffee roaster and well made. A woman from the German manufacturer was very helpful with information too; it is in fact exactly the same model as the Severin PC 3751 Popcornmaker.

But does it roast coffee?
Never used this as a popcorn maker, but I have roasted plenty of coffee in it, which is good fun, if a little haphazard and messy. I think I made a fan cut out or ran at half speed or similar - certainly beans stopped blowing around as much, and roasted much, much faster after the first use. After that fan started working again, roast times went way up, or, on a cold day, it stopped getting hot enough. (I roast outside.)Does it roast coffee to an acceptable level? I think so, and I've made some decent tasting coffee this way.

excellent
Does the job brilliantly! I admit, it does a bit of mess as some flakes miss the bowl, and also some percent of kernels does not open, but I see no problem with these. I actually heard somewhere that the kernels which do not open are perhaps not fresh or have not been stored correctly. I don't know if it's true, though, but it makes sense, as the amount of unopened kernels varies from one pack to another (if it was a machine's fault - I would be expecting similar amounts every time). Still, I tend to redo those unopened kernels once more and then dispose of whatever unopened second time. Some people see as disadvantage that you cannot add flavours to the machine - for me it is not a problem, as I like the original taste very much, besides you can add whatever you want to the bowl as soon as the pops leave the machine. I only slightly sprinkle it with salt after it's done. And actually - without the added fat or caramel it is actually quite healthy low-calorie snack! It's true! One more thing - my device, purchased April 2012 was equipped with European plug + UK adapter which works perfectly well to this day."Severin, Severin awaits you there" ;)

Maybe look somewhere else
This is a great idea but a few things to consider are that the plus is actually an EU plug and the manufacturer provides a converter. It's actually a great converter and is by a long shot the highest quality one I've seen but still a UK plug would have been better. The other thing is that there may be a design flaw with the clear cover. Popcorn flies out of the machine and then all over the place. I've tried bowls with various sizes but the span of the popcorns is actually quite wide. Sometimes corn even gets blown out before it has had time to pop resulting in it exploding in the bowl and making even more mess. I've had other air poppers before and while none are perfect, this one is not really towards the top of the list. The construction however is sturdy so I can't give it less than 3 stars. I've started using a colander to ensure that popped corn stays in the bow but it's a rather comical sight, I'd imagine. (the colander sort of covers the large mixing bowl that I use for the popcorn.

All hot-air popcorn makers are not equally good
This is the second Severin popcorn maker I have bought. The first one went wrong after a few years and I tried buying one locally from John Lewis. This has still not broken down, but does not pop the kernels satisfactorily (too many incompletely popped kernels that make hard work for your teeth). To begin with and for a long time, I just put this down to the popping corn (e.g. a lower quality batch), but recently started to wonder whether it was the machine as we have used corn from a variety of sources, always with the same unsatisfactory result. I therefore decided to try another Severin popcorn maker as this was a machine I knew and lo and behold, the corn now pops perfectly (although you always get a few unpopped kernels). What the technical reasons for this are, I don't know. I am sure many of the other popcorn makers on offer work just as well, but now know that not all of them do. The John Lewis one wasn't cheaper either, so it's not just a question of price.

Perfect addition to a late-night movie
Worked as expected. Thought it was a good-touch to include the popcorn as it was ready to trail upon arrival > yummy.

PopCorn sani, buoni e subito
