Apollo 13 - 20th Anniversary Edition [Blu-ray] [1995] [Region Free]

What's not to like. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon. True story....very exciting.

I loved Apollo 13 when I watched it at the cinema when it was released in the 90's, and I still own a VHS copy of it. Amazingly, in a collection of close to 1000 DVDs and Blu-Rays, I don't own it on disc. With the recent celebrations of the moon landings, I had a hankering to watch it again for the first time in years. No longer rocking a VHS player in my home cinema line-up, I went looking for it on Amazon Prime Video, Sky Cinema or any of the catch up services, but only Amazon had it on a pay to watch basis. I did a quick search on Amazon and found that I could buy the full remastered Blu-Ray copy for less money, delivered in a couple of days. I went for that option, so I can watch it again and again. Bargain.As for the film, it stands the test of time very well. Armed these days with the internet it's easy to fact check, and while there's obvious creative license used throughout, it remains true to the story and one that was a remarkable moment in space travel and human ingenuity.

Great transfer to Blu Ray. Possibly the worst UI for a disc menu I've seen since the 90s. I just wanted to play the movie on a PS3 and the audio commentary settings were hard to determine. Eventually managed to set them.

This is great! I've loved the film for years but hadn't seen it in a while. I watched it the night it arrived and noticed it has two audio commentaries: one by director Ron Howard, and another by the actual Jim and Marilyn Lovell themselves. Needless to say I spent the next two nights watching the film again with those two commentaries. I'm a bit of a space nut so I found it fascinating. You might watch the film and think there are just too many unrealistic problems occurring one after the other. Just listen to the commentaries and you'll find out exactly what happened!

The DVD version of this was, in a technical sense, very disappointing. The encoding was very poor, making the film noisy and sometimes pretty grainy (yes, the 1995 footage - not the archive). This remastered version fixes all that and gives the film a new immediacy that even if, like me, you have seen the film a few times, lifts it to new heights of excellence.The storytelling, characterisation, direction, settings, effects and drama elements remain - as they always were - absolutely top class.

Although there have been several 'Anniversary' Editions of this classic movie over the years, this 20th Anniversary Bluray release boasts a newly restored and remastered presentation using the original 35mm camera film elements scanned at 4K resolution - the results are truly stunning, with vastly improved colours, depth of field and image clarity which pretty much renders all previous versions obsolete in comparison, so if you're asking yourself 'is this really worth buying to replace the one I already have?'...the answer is Yes, without a shadow of a doubt, it is indeed....

This is definately pristine in both the visual and sound departments and there is also an 11 minute extra feature unique to this release ( strangely not noted on the reverse of the cover ) recorded for the 20th anniversary. To be frank however if you already have the previous bluray version, there is not a great deal here to warrant a further purchase. The film however remains a 5 star feature.

Closely based on the real events, this film still stands up on Blu Ray. Great performances and real tension. Even most of the special effects still look great.
