"If you're even thinking about a job search, start here." - Marty Cagan, Silicon Valley Product Group Based on 25 years of experience working with thousands of leaders โ from early-career product managers to CEOs โ Never Search Alone gives readers a time-tested, multi-step process (with exercises, tools, and templates) to find the right job now. This new approach to looking for a job and building a good career focuses on three big ideas learned from helping thousands of job seekers: Never Search Alone. Because your emotional balance is the most important thing you need to manage in a job search, you need a support group of fellow job seekers that will help you turn insecurity and anxiety into hope, motivation, confidence, and accountability. Candidate-Market Fit. If product-market fit drives company success, candidate-market fit drives career success. So, before you begin interviewing and networking you need to identify precisely what you want and what the market wants. Phyl shows how this key step will help you figure out the intersection between your hopes and dreams and market realities. Boss the Process. When interviewing and negotiating, you need to put yourself in charge. From how you interview to how you negotiate, Never Search Alone presents an entirely new way to think about improving the odds of getting an offer and then negotiating for all you need to succeed in the new job. Foreword by Marty Cagan (Excerpt) For more than 20 years, Iโve encouraged people who are serious about their career to meet Phyl Terry. Yes, Phyl is one of the best-connected leaders in the industry. Yes, Phyl is a genuine human being who truly cares about you personally and your career. But what really sets Phyl apart is that he understands how to harness the power of community. This book is all about scaling the magic that is Phyl. I have seen Phyl and the techniques he advocates dramatically improve the career trajectories of countless people. And not just people who are in mid-career, dissatisfied with their current job, and want to find better. These techniques are at least as valuable for new college graduates looking for that all-important first professional job. Or another very difficult but increasingly common situation: older employees who find themselves in need of a new job, yet encountering systemic ageism at every turn. Which is to say, nearly everyone in the professional workforce can benefit from the techniques in this book. And one more pro tip: itโs a good idea to learn these techniques before you need them. When you are able to find a job that you truly enjoy, that leverages your unique skills and talents, where you can receive the coaching necessary to continue to grow and develop to reach your potential, and where you can make a real contribution, you have meaningfully improved your life. My hope is that this book will help countless people to improve their lives. โ Marty Cagan Founder, Silicon Valley Product Group December 2021 Review: A Game-Changing Approach to Job Seeking - "Never Search Alone" by Phyl Terry is a remarkable book that revolutionizes the way we approach job seeking in the modern world. The guide - and support - that I needed

Help for a Modern Job Search
I have recently experienced a layoff. Like many others, I found myself surprised, saddened, burnt out, and confused. I truly had no idea what I wanted to do next, but I knew it wasnโt what I had been doing for the previous 14 years. Time for a change! I had a high level of anxiety trying to start all over and figure out how to find new work, in a totally different industry, with my transferrable skills, while not meeting all the requirements in the job descriptions. In addition, โcompetingโ with the ATS and other candidates more qualified for the job. I knew I had work to do but didnโt know where to start. After several weeks of the โstandard job search activities,โ that rarely if ever amount to positive results, I met Phyl in a free LinkedIn session talking about the power of Job Search Councils (JSC). I immediately signed up to join a Job Search Council community as a moderator. Phyl Terryโs comprehensive guide to improving your job search skills is a proven path to success beyond simply applying for the next job. The bookโs introduction is magical and there are numerous testimonials to the power of the process. Phyl's writing style is engaging and witty, making this book powerfully informative and positively entertaining. The path outlined in the book is a clear and community-based search approach vs. an individual effort filled with rejections and ghosting. The book delivers a framework and toolset for asking for help in a self-reliant and confident way โ outlining the benefit of peer support. Collaborative features with a practical approach vs. managing a job search in a lonely, isolating and discouraging way. The JSC offers time for reflection and research, doing mutually reinforcing activities to find your next fulfilling job โ the one you have been searching for! Itโs a great way to meet people from all walks of life, at all stages of their career journey โ all with one purpose โ finding a job that fulfills you, that speaks to your candidate market fit, and where you can shine. Iโm still in the process with my JSC, with deep gratitude to my council and to Phyl! Iโve gained more than I ever anticipated through my own self-reflection with this bookโs guidance, along with the regular JSC meetings of support. I highly recommend this book for anyone, whether youโre employed and reflecting on your next move, or you find yourself unemployed and need a jumpstart, some positive energy and ideas to move forward. I wish I had this book years before I really had to use it! Itโs a blessing and will provide you with hope and a detailed map to your next big thing!

Helpful book companion to your job search community
I learned about Never Search Alone from a trusted former coworker who had read the book and participated as a volunteer moderator for the accompanying Job Search Council, a free community where you're matched with peer job searchers to read and do the exercises in the book together. Inspired by his example which led him to land a terrific new role, I decided to moderate a JSC and am so glad I did! The book and community have exceeded my expectations and provided useful tools and support in my job search journey.

An ADHD-Friendly Resource for Job Seeking
I wish this book had existed when I was in my 20s... as a certified professional ADHD coach I recently started sharing this as a go-to resource for clients who are looking for their next job. Iโll preface this review by saying that as with any book, certain adaptations and adjustments will likely need to be made depending on the individual. That said, this book is incredibly ADHD-friendly and full of some wonderful tools, resources, & guides for the job seeker. The core message of โNever Search Aloneโ is around enlisting connection & community while you navigate the process of finding a job. Phyl recommends forming something called a โJob Search Council,โ which is defined as a small support group of fellow job seekers to help provide emotional support, accountability, and perspective. Two big themes stuck out to me as particularly ADHD-friendly: 1. COMMUNITY has been a key part of my own success over the last few years as I started and launched my newest business. My first 2 careers I pretty much faced in isolation; and looking back I can see how much harder it was and how alone I felt. Based on a recommendation from my therapist, I decided to form a small consulting group with a couple of my classmates last year to help provide ongoing structure, accountability, & emotional support after our training classes ended. We have met weekly for over a year now to chat about how things are going, discuss client case scenarios and business issues, and so on. Creating your own peer support group helps alleviate some of the loneliness, gives you additional perspective/network connections, and provides additional motivation and accountability. (Pro Tip: Creating a continuous feedback loop is a must for the ADHD brain. ERO - Event-Response-Outcome.) 2. FOCUS ON AN INDIVIDUAL'S UNIQUE STRENGTHS & TALENTS (Ideal Niche) - What drives career success is a combo of two things: 1) Your โCandidate-Market fit," which is defined as the intersection between your hopes, dreams, and market realities; and 2) the โFour Legs of the Negotiation Stool.โ These ideas provide criteria that are very much in alignment with what is needed for a person with ADHD to be successful. It's vital to be able to understand and clearly define your strengths, talents, and skills; and to know what you need (resources, budget, support) and how to ask for it up front. (Interest & the ability to enlist your strengths on a regular basis are nonnegotiable for the ADHD brain.) A few words of warning: Being able to understand how the market sees you by asking for objective feedback and facing the reality of the current market have potential to become barriers for a variety of reasonsโฆ 1) People with ADHD often struggle with rejection sensitivity (afraid of what they might hear due to a lifetime of negative messaging); and 2) they often lack awareness. However, I can attest to the fact that by creating a safe & supportive community, and focusing on your strengths you can successfully navigate these challenges, find the right job, and set yourself up for success before even accepting said job.

A new paradigm for job searches!
I found Never Search Alone (NSA) to be a phenomoneal guide to helping me with my job search. In it, author Phyl Terry provides a completely new paradigm through which to view job searches. It took me some time to mentally unwire all of the advice I was taught by my college career office, and rewire my thinking to Phyl's paradigm - but I find it much more useful and powerful. A few of the areas I find most useful are: - Candidate-Market Fit -- I'm not a product manager, so I'm not used to thinking in product terms. But Phyl is. And his advice to see my skills in light of job market needs is enlightening. - Listening Tour and Gratitude Tour -- I found it incredibly useful to get feedback from colleagues and friends who know me well. Feedback has indeed been a gift for me in helping me identify my blind spots and areas for improvement. - Job Mission and OKRs -- this has been a total gamechanger for me. It made me really think through job descriptions, and put all interview discussions into an actionable light. Also, I read the book Good Strategy / Bad Strategy per Phyl's recommendation - and it gave me a completely new way and more useful way of thinking about strategy (a badly overused and misused term). Many thanks to Phyl for sharing all of this wisdom in a compact and fun-to-read book!

An Illuminating Beacon in the Maze of Job Search
"Never Search Alone" by Phyl Terry is a remarkably insightful and inspiring career guide. The book's meticulously researched content and well-constructed arguments have profoundly transformed my perspective on job hunting. What immediately strikes about the book is its depth of understanding concerning the job search process. The author doesn't merely touch upon the surface of conventional wisdom but instead dives into layers of insight that can be quite surprising and thought-provoking. It was an enlightening experience to read about concepts and strategies that, despite their significance, had never crossed my mind before. Terry's approach to research is commendable. Itโs not just the quantity but the quality of the information that sets this book apart. Every piece of advice and suggestion is rooted in careful research, and every claim is supported by concrete evidence. This lends the book an air of credibility that is both comforting and encouraging. One of the most impactful aspects of the book for me was its emphasis on the power of networking and reaching out. The title "Never Search Alone" is not just a clever phrase; it encapsulates the essence of the book's main message. Terry elucidates how harnessing the power of community and making connections can make the arduous job search process less intimidating and more fruitful. The book makes a compelling argument for overcoming the reluctance many of us feel when it comes to asking for help. Through poignant examples and powerful anecdotes, Terry underscores the value of seeking assistance. This emphasis on the importance of seeking and offering support in professional life is a fresh perspective in the field of job search literature. The transformative impact of "Never Search Alone" is not just cognitive but also behavioral. Post reading, I find myself putting the insights into practice, reaching out more frequently, and asking for help without hesitation. It has fostered an understanding of the importance of community and how leveraging it can make a significant difference in one's job search journey. In summary, "Never Search Alone" by Phyl Terry is not just another book about job searching. It is an inspirational and informative guide, a lighthouse that helps navigate the sometimes stormy seas of job hunting. For anyone grappling with their career paths or job search, this book will undoubtedly offer valuable direction and motivation.

Turning the Job Search Upside Down
"Never Search Alone" is a comprehensive guide to improving your job search skills. Phyl Terry's writing style is engaging and witty, making this book informative and entertaining. The book is structured in a way that is easy to follow, with each chapter covering a different aspect of a successful job search. In addition, Terry uses real-life examples to illustrate his points, making the book actionable and relatable. One of the standout features of this book is its practical approach. Terry provides readers with a wide range of tips and tricks that can be immediately implemented to improve how you approach and land a new job. For example, Phyl recommends you join a Job Search Council, put the job search and resume on hold, and focus on what you like to do and what is important to you before you go out and randomly apply to 100s of positions. Terry's emphasis on collaboration is another highlight of the book. He emphasizes the importance of reaching out to others for help with your search, whether joining one of his Job Search Councils; Phylโs company will match you with other candidates with similar backgrounds to form a group for free or connect with former colleagues and friends. This collaborative approach not only improves search results but also helps to foster a sense of community among searchers. Terry encourages readers to share their knowledge and help others, a refreshing perspective in an age where people often feel they need to compete for information. Overall, "Never Search Alone" is an excellent resource for anyone looking to change the way they approach finding a new job, not just any job, but a job that matches oneโs skills and interests, as well as how to ask for what you need to succeed before accepting the position. The emphasis on collaboration and ethical considerations is also a welcome addition to the genre. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to become a more effective searcher.

If I had only discovered this in my first month...
I was so thankful to find out about Phyl's book Never Search Alone when job hunting. Previously I had been doing so for over 9 months with no success. Getting the book really helped me utilize good tools and strategies and more importantly Phy's volunteer team put me in touch with other job seekers in forming a Job Search Committee (JSC). I cannot believe this was done at no cost to me. It is evident Phyl is out to help people not profit from them and I am so grateful for his and his volunteers' help. He also set up group calls with jobseekers from all the world to share his strategies and provide support. An incredible man and a really great reference book. I have met some wonderful people in my JSC and I am definitely recommending this book to anyone who is searching for a new job. Kris R

Community, Resources, and Hope: What 'Never Search Alone' Offers from Day One"
Recently I discovered "Never Search Alone," and it's already making a huge difference in my job search journey. Even though I haven't been allocated to a job search council yet, I'm amazed at how much progress I'm making thanks to the wealth of free resources and community support available. From the moment I started reading, I felt a sense of relief. The author truly understands the isolation that often comes with job hunting and how draining it can be to constantly lean on family and friends for support. This book offers a refreshing alternative - a community of like-minded job seekers who really get what you're going through. What stands out to me is the structured approach. It's not just inspirational talk; there's a clear path to follow, which has been incredibly helpful in keeping me focused and motivated. As I work through the process, I can already see improvements in my communication skills and my ability to tell my story effectively - crucial skills for any job seeker. The free resources have been a game-changer. Even before being assigned to a council, I've gained access to valuable workflows and templates that are teaching me new skills and approaches to job hunting. It's like having a personal career coach right at my fingertips. One of the highlights for me has been the bi-weekly LinkedIn calls. Listening to other job seekers share their experiences gives me a sense of community and keeps me inspired. It's reassuring to know that I'm not alone in this journey, and I always come away from these calls with new insights and ideas. What impresses me most about "Never Search Alone" is that it's so much more than just a book. It's a comprehensive system designed to not only help you find a job but also to learn more about yourself in the process. The promise of being matched with people at a similar career level, regardless of industry, is exciting. If you're feeling stuck or isolated in your job search, I highly recommend giving "Never Search Alone" a try. It's already changing my approach to job hunting, and I'm excited to see where this journey leads.

The most modern approach to job seeking
Over my career, I have been exposed to great coaches and insights on job search. Phyl, however, takes things one step further. What he proposes is the bleeding edge of job searching. Furthermore, beyond the great tips and tools, this book instills an "entrepreneurial" mindset, in the sense that it empowers us to take ownership of our careers, and think of our relationship to the organisations we work for more as business relationships between partners, as opposed to the outdated "job-giver"/"job-taker" mentality. Great read, strongly recommended.

Make clear your worth (to yourself and others)
I believe this book will make a huge difference in you job search (no matter if you're in the early days of your career or you have been in the market for decades). I bought it, read it, joined one o the councils and can say it's worth the time/effort and it's also fun. It has nothing to do with tradicional job search.
