Essential TV of the highest quality
For different reasons Some TV programmes and movies etch themselves into your memory. One summer is such a program.I watched this when c4 first showed it and then i watched the repeat, which i recorded to betaSomething makes one summer special. In many ways its a fantasy where two budding criminals get a brief chance of seeing the world in a radically different wayTrue to life, their past comes back to haunt them.A happy ending would have ruined this classic programFor me, David Morrissey will always be Billy and James Hazeldine will aways be Kidder. One summer is a very special program for me.We all want to get away and none of us ever can. Not totally. One summer is simply essential.

Really superb drama
Just fantastic drama. Watched it a few times and this Bluray edition is certainly worth the money though it can hardly be said to be very high HD quality due to the source material and limited budget to transfer it.If you want to watch something with a similar escape to the country feel, like the time they spent with Kidder, you could try Forever Green with John Anderton and Pauline Collins. Very different in most ways (though collins is a scouser), its not hard hitting drama at all, but if you want to dream of an idyllic life in the country it does that fantastically.

Where have the DVD bonus features gone?
I was hoping to replace my old DVD with this new blu ray, but it looks like I will have to hold onto it.Yes the new disc boasts improved picture quality and Alternate scenes filmed for pre-watershed transmission. But for some unfathomable reason Network have dropped the two commentaries, music suites and interviews with David Morrissey, Spencer Leigh, Ian Hart and producer Keith Richardson from the earlier DVD.At least at the time of writing the blu ray is cheap, (£10.99) and still worth having for the remastered picture.

''Great Children's Television'' if it wasn't for the swearing and violence.
This is a pretty good story even though a bit far fetched in places, very well produced and has stood the test of time.If it wasn't for the Violence and Swearing this could quite easily have been broken down into 10 x 25 minute episodes and put out at Tea Time in competition with 'Blue Peter' or whatever? for Children's Television as it was way back in the 1980's.Very good performances by David Morrissey (billy) and James Hazeldine (kidder) I could not stand Spencer Leigh (icky) he was just a whinging, Irritating, ill mannered thick cretin. His voice got right on my nerves. Maybe they should have chosen a different actor to play Icky? Spencer Leigh was in the very first episode of Inspector Morse 'The Dead of Jericho' 1987 and played a whinging, irritating, ill mannered druggie (ned murdoch). He got right on my nerves in that.I notice there are a lot of 5 Star Reviews maybe most of them come from people related to Liverpool and the surrounding area, as they may find it very nostalgic?I am afraid 3 Stars is the best that it deserves, but that is only my opinion.A good DVD to have in anyone's collection, but not the best one. Thanks for reading

This is a brilliant mini tv series
I remember this when I was a kid and watching this and everybody at schools all over the UK were talking about this excellent tv show! This is PURE quality tv mini series about two school boys who run away from home and school because they had enough of the crap life. Well acted and such a great story. Locations were wonderful and I'm glad I've got this on DVD!Everybody should watch this as it's one of those shows that got everybody in school play grounds talking about it! Such a brilliant mini tv series with 5 episodes that were so good to watch and see what's it like back then. It brought back memories for me so BUY THIS NOW!

'What do we get from chickens?' 'Salmonella.'
I was quite young (nine or ten years old) when this was first on and my Mum quite rightly didn't allow me to see it all, though I recalled enough to want to see it again. Just as in normal life, there are very funny moments and some rather sad ones too. This issues looked at (gangs, young love, poverty, disillusionment) meant that this story could have been set in any time and are they are still relevant today. 'Where does milk come from?' 'From the milkman.' 'Softarse! Where does he get it from?' 'From his van.'

Nostalgia in a DVD box
I saw this many years ago when I was young enough to side with the kids in the story and was naive enough to cheer them on.Watching it as an adult gave me mixed feelings, for with age comes maturity, and I now look on the drama with fresh (older) eyes, and can see it for a superbly written, brilliantly acted piece of cutting edge drama that is not entirely out of place despite its age.It transaltes well to DVD, and if you saw it when you were younger, you will fall in love all over again with the shenanigins of this comic pair as they bumble their way through the Welsh countryside causing mayhem as they go, and I defy you to remember exactly how it ended - I thought I remembered but was very wrong, meaning the ending was a surprise to me!For newer viewers, it will appeal simply because it is so well made and writen, created in the heyday of drama, when the only reality show was the Eurovision Contest!Sit back, relax, and kiss farewell to several hours as you sink into comfortable nostalgia.

A wonderful watch.
My husband and I had talked of this programme on and off since we first saw it in 1983. We still remember the impact it had on us. Full of that incredible mix of pathos and humour and wonderful acting by the superb David Morrissey and Spencer Leigh. We did wonder if it would stand the test of time, and it so does. You don't notice the old cars and funny haircuts. I would recommend it to anyone, and feel it well worthy of repeat showing on national TV.
