The Critics Have Spoken
I was compelled to write a review for American Pet Diner's Timothy Gold Hay after purchasing it for my two guinea pigs. I have tried tons of hay for them: The cheap stuff at the grocery store, the locally produced stuff from the feed store, the premium brands, etc. Some brands were so bad, my piggies refused to eat it and used it as litter. Ouch! I decided to give this brand a shot after realizing I was low on hay for the boys and Prime would be faster than finding time to get to the store to pick up their old standby, Oxbow. When my purchase arrived, I was confused to see the hay in a big box instead of the blue bag pictured on the site. That said, I definitely prefer the box; it made feeding the boys a lot easier. Plus, it's almost layered into the box. It's hard to explain, but feeding them was easier and less messy than it usually is.Now for the important part: How was the taste? My piggies LOVED it. I have never seen them tear into their hay box like that. Even after they tipped the box over, they ate every single blade and begged for more. I've fed them several more times and the verdict remains. They will never be fed Oxbow or anything else again. My boys have spoken!

First batch was great, second batch not. Third was great again!
I purchased this hay based on reviews and it was absolutly great the first time. The hay was so long I had to cut it in half to fit in my mini-rex's bowl (standing up). It lasted at least 3 months if not more. The second batch was no where near the quality of the first. The hay was much more brittle, and there was no need for scissors this time. I have to grab a bunch and shake out all the "dust" before I put the 3-4" pieces of hay in it. The bowl is always FULL of dust and tiny unedible pieces after my mini finishes the "longest" pieces. I have to throw out what's left in her bowl every time because she won't eat the "dust". I called American Pet Diner and was told that it's "natural" to have such a differene in batches. Really? It seems to me that this last stuff was really short & dry when they mowed/harvested it. If I do decide to purchase/give them a try again (only because the first batch was so good), I will check it well when I first get it and return it if it looks like this again and that will be my last purchase.Edit 8/2012: Well, ordered the hay again, and this time it was like the first... nice long pieces. Very happy again... hope it stays this way. Always fast delivery... so I increased my star rating to 4. Not five, because of inconsistancy.

RECTANGULAR CUBE BOX WAS BETTER!!!!
The hay is different from a year or so ago- but I'm not sure that's a bad thing, because Guinea Pigs (according to my vet. & GPIG resources) are supposed to forage on dry grass, like they do in their native habitat, somewhere in South America. My gripe is with the box itself. The box used to be just like the one they have in the picture; which affords a nice rectangular cube of neatly compact hay. AND those boxes make excellent habitat for Guinea Pigs!!! I have 6 of them in Hugo's cage with cut-out holes, so he can run the gamut! Now, the hay arrives in an oversized shirt box, which is very awkward and the hay manages to spill out all over! Please go back to your original box, or the long cube box that I'm referring to! Charge what you must. Hugo, my pig- will be happier and so will I!

Dusty, short, brown, made my bunny cough
The media could not be loaded. I have been buying this for years, but starting from 2014 the quality has SIGNIFICANTLY dropped, it's now much more dusty, brown, short and just over all inedible.Review update (7/4/14):I dropped 3 stars from the product because of 2 reasons:1. The price hike, it used to be about $17, to $26, now $332. The quality of the hay has significantly dropped, it no longer look like the hay in my video anymore; more often than not, it's dusty, many brown, short pieces, and also quit moist; it almost looks like you get the scraps of hay. After nearly 3 years of buying this hay I became quite disappointed with this product since about 6 months, yes the prime delivery is amazing, but the quality and the price just does not match up.The strange thing is, if you buy it straight from americanpetdiner.com (I usually get the 25 lb gold timothy), the quality is really fantastic, like how this 5lb one used to be. The 25lb box's price is ok ($54) but shipping is hefty (about $38), totaling $92, and it always takes 10+ days to arrive; the cost & inconvenience really adds up, we often run out of hay before the big box arrive & end up buying bad quality hay from pet stores. I started to find other places to order hay, fresh, affordable & fast shipping are my priorities, please leave me a comment if you have good recommendations. Thanks.

Not really worth it...
I got both this hay and the alfalfa hay for my rabbit. They're both really crumbly and are more like litter than food. My rabbit won't eat tiny little pieces, so I kept having to replace the hay and the tiny, crumbly, mulch-y bits just kept accumulating as the larger pieces crumbled. A lot of what was in the bag was already pretty crumbled up as well. I ended up replacing it with Kaytee hay when I finished it and I still have tons of dusty crumbled hay in her cage. I'm using it as bedding and as part of her litter right now because I have so much and I don't want it to go to waste.Maybe it's fine for smaller animals, but rabbits tend to like larger pieces and this has very small, fragile pieces that do not hold up well. When compared with Oxbow and Kaytee hay it's definitely of an inferior quality. Definitely going to stick with Oxbow and Kaytee from now on. It's worth the extra money.
