The Heat keeps humidity from building up by stabilizing the temp inside the safe. So there is no humidity taken out of the air, it just prevents it. Works well.

Q: Does anyone know the surface temperature

I used a temperature “gun” with a red laser dot: 116 degrees Fahrenheit pointed directly on the gold tube. Internal safe temperature is 75. Just installed the 18” model yesterday, September 26, 2020.

I have the 18" model in a nearly 12 cubic feet gun safe (24 long gun capacity) and it has done fine thus.

What's the functional difference between this and the cheaper black version?

The main characteristic difference that I've been able to figure out (besides the color***) is that the GoldenRod units are higher wattage heaters.

*** The color and reflectivity of the surface makes a small amount of difference for emittance (i.e. - heat radiating efficiency) - matte, less reflective black objects radiate somewhat better than more reflective gold).
