For the inside collar connection and connection to hose should I use teflon tape or sealer like "real-tuff"?

The Hayward # SP1408 is made of ABS material. A compatible sealant or Teflon tape are sufficient.

I'm a fairly new pool owner and I'm assuming the pool level needs to be below the returns when replacing this fitting?

i only needed to replace the inside part of this fitting. So I did not lower my pool level. if i had to replace the ouside part i would still not lower the level. i would have pluggrd the hole until i had the new part in place. i can't imagine you would leak to many gallons while you made the switch.

will this work with pool wall thickness of 1 1/8 inch?

Never heard of a wall that thick. I use them in concrete walls and retrofit them for my use. Im sure you could do same thing just put cement on backside to hold it in place

If the inside of pool ring is cracked could that be the cause of a leak? Cracked between the 2 screws

I believe that I read that it can be. I have had some cracks in mine that I thought could be leaking, but after replacing them it did not appear that they were leaking. If they did leak, I suspect the rate of leakage would be small. If you have significant leaks I would change them first, but I would suspect some other cause.
