Does the internal handle lock from the outside (so it can't be opened from the outside through a broken window)?

No. It has to be deadlocked from the inside using the key. The key can open it when deadlocked from the outside. I hope this helps.

Does anyone know if these night latches are left/right handed or are they universal?

Hi, Melanie. They are universal. For right hand the nib button is above the latch and for left hand it would be below it. It would work equally well either way.Tony

If you lock it from the inside, then no key means no escape
