Wow
I don't usually give out five star ratings, especially for the first volume in mangas, but this was good. The characters are awesome, the art I love, such a simple story but so well done.

A unique 'shounen' romance.
I researched what this manga was about since it looked like the romance manga I was looking for. I'm a hardcore manga/anime fan so you could say I have my fair share of knowledge and experience. First off I want to clear up some things, despite what it looks like its actually a shounen not a shoujo (shounen literally means boy and shoujo means girl: In the anime/manga world most titles and series have a specific audience they want it to appeal to and Horimiya's audience is male) That being said I still get the shoujo feel through the art and general pacing of the story so I'd classify it myself as both shoujo and shounen since it does appeal to both sexes.Story - So far so good. Its unique and as a adept anime/manga fan I can tell you why. Most romances these days have pretty repetitive character designs/personalities/etc but Horimiya is different. Its unique because it mocks those "cookie-cutter" characters that you see in your average title and tricks you into believing that's the same case here. The opening chapter portrays your typical "nerd/otaku" male protagonist who doesn't talk to anyone and has no friends and the popular loved-by-everyone-look-at-me-I-want-attention female protagonist that I personally find annoying. Now here's the kick to Horimiya, these two characters do a complete 180 degree turn and become something you simply wouldn't expect. I don't want to spoil it too much so I'll let you find out yourself.Art - Hagiwara's art is nothing special but it gets the job done. I do see the shoujo theme throughout but there's nothing wrong with that, in fact it immersed me into the manga. It isn't super detailed which helps create a clear image and helps the reader concentrate more on the faces which are much more detailed. At times its a little hard to understand whats going on (without looking at the words) of whats in front of you. The lack of real shading somewhat disappointed me as I just love seeing authors and artists give their utmost effort into drawing an image. One thing I did like about the art was the comedy moments which are very easy to see and go so well together with the writing.Overall - Its unique, the author came up with something different but not necessarily amazing. I've only read this volume but hope to read the second soon as I've heard the quality drops. Also have to include the fact that the covers are gorgeous and great to the touch with a shiny finish.
