They're shellac flakes all right, of a dark purplish hue. Seem to be consistent in color and texture. Cannot say if they are dewaxed -- time will tell. I use an old coffee grinder to create a powder, then mix a "2 pound cut" with alcohol to make a sealer coat on wood projects.A couple light coats slightly darkens the wood, adds a touch of 'richness', for lack of a better term. Very useful in patterned plywood projects - makes the edge grain 'pop' with added contrast. Also nice effect on dark wood species like walnut. You may want to try a sample before commiting to lighter woods like maple.

I used these shellac flakes at roughly a 1-pound cut to finish a cabinet I built for my Behringer 2600 synthesizer. They dissolved easily in denatured alcohol, but the mixture was a little difficult to brush, so I diluted it further. It brushed on well after that and dried nicely despite the Florida garage environment.I should note that this shellac is definitely not dewaxed, and I was unable to achieve the French-polished finish I wanted. After abandoning that effort, I applied one final brush coat as carefully as I could.Overall, I am pleased with the result. I do wish I could have polished it a bit further, but for the price this turned out great.
