Definitive gardening advice - along with a story or two - for the novice or expert from one of the nation's most-trusted, and Grumpy, sources. Gardeners from across the country have turned to Southern Living Senior Garden Editor Steven Bender - known affectionately as "The Grumpy Gardener" - for his keen knowledge and gardening know-how with equal doses sarcasm and sidesplitting humor for nearly 35 years. Finally, the collected wit and wisdom of the magazine's most irreverent and beloved columnist can be found in a single A - Z volume, providing gardeners from coast-to-coast with his valuable tips for planting, troubleshooting, and growing flowers, vegetables, shurbs, trees and more, all delivered in his signature cantankerous style. Sidebars throughout the book - "Ask Grumpy" - help readers tackle common garden problems ("How do I get ride of little house ants?"), and readers from the past 35 years take part in the book when Grumpy shares his favorite reader's responses to some of his advice, his favorite rules for gardening, and Q & A's covering your favorite plants and flowers are all inside. Additionally, beautiful line-drawings and illustrations throughout make the book as beautiful to look at as well as entertaining to read. The Grumpy Gardener is sure to become the most trusted tool in your gardening shed! Review: The Grumpy Gardener - I have been following "Grumpy" for many years in Southern Living. I am also an avid gardener. His practical, down to earth comments always make me smile. As an insecure beginning gardener, Grumpy taught me not to be sentimental about mistakes. His acerbic style makes me laugh at myself and not take gardening so seriously. Make a mistake, correct mistake, move on and learn from mistake and don't whine or ask stupid questions. Even if you are not a serious gardener, this book is worth a read, especially if you like tongue-in-cheek commentary and acerbic wit. I loved it and hope he does a follow-up. Review: Fun and helpful info for the gardener - So good I am ordering another book for a friend.

You'll Love His Sense of Humor!
I have always enjoyed reading Mr. Bender's columns in one of my monthly magazines. I love his sense of humor, and he really knows how to explain the care of garden plants. I am really enjoying his book--so easy to read and find out about specific plants as I need that information. This one is worth buying and keeping. 5 Stars!

Humorous but not always best advice
I enjoy his curmudgeony style, which is sarcastic at times and funny. As a gardener, I donโt agree with his point of view for a couple topics, including English ivy (please donโt plant this, I donโt care what he says) and lawns (itโs ok to have lawn but consider reducing the size of lawn areas and plant more natives). The book is alphabetical like an encyclopedia and each entry is about a page long.

Grumpy Gardener is a Hoot
I always enjoy reading the Grumpy Gardener column in Southern Living. I've learned a lot from his expertise over the years. In the midst of his bad attitude, Steve knows his gardening stuff. This book was quite enjoyable. I did recognize some old columns, so I realize this book is mostly recycled columns. But still, very enjoyable reading. This book would make a great gift for the gardener or wanna be gardener in your life. Some of his pet peeves made me laugh out loud. I have the yellow bushes he hates. And yes, I have a neighbor who alternated them with the pink ones he also hates. I forget their names. He made me want to look up some plants to learn more about them. So yes, I learned a lot.

for a lighthearted garden lover
I like gardening but it doesn't consume my life. I read the Grumpy Gardener's column in the Southern Living magazine every month and enjoy it so much I thought I'd give this little book a try. Well, it is not a plant and tree encyclopedia but what it is is a book of very happy reviews/do/don'ts and whatever of some very common plants, flowers, shrubs, and trees. I thoroughly enjoyed it and got lots of chuckles out loud from reading it. I then passed it onto a dear friend who is about my speed when it comes to gardening. She loved it!

Love this book
The information is great in this book. However, there were some things I was hoping to find to help us out in our garden which it did not incorporate. All gardens are different. The Grumpy Gardener was very helpful . He also wrote this book in a way with gentle humor. I love his articles in the Southern Living Magazine.

Not worth the money
Author assumes we know what plants look like. Not much valuable information. I would have sent it back but I damaged the cover which is easily done. Not worth the money, way overpriced. I do not recommend this book
