Optical quality (bokeh/sharpness) comparisons between this lens and the Sony 85 1.8? Quite a price premium for a lens that's only marginally faster.

The 1.4 and alike many others of this nature provide a specific need for wide open photography. I would buy the 1.8 as it is a fine lens for most occasions and guarantees a higher rate of infocus shots. If money was no object, I would buy both as they would serve me for different uses.

What’s the difference on this lens and the Sony 35mm 1.8 lens? I’m looking to use for portraits and video. I have 12-24 f4, 24-70 f2.8, 70-300 f4.5

Hello, there are a few great differences to look at, they are very different lenses for different purposes. The focal lenght itself will show greater magnification compared to the 35mm. You will find this great for portraits. It's an extra two-thirds of an f-stop brighter than the 35mm f/1.8, meaning faster shutter speeds in the same lighting conditions and shallower depth of field. And the 85 GM is part of an elite series of lenses designed with professionals in mind, its optical quality is impressive to say the least.

It is compatible but with the following exceptions:

- The SteadyShot is not supported.
- When Iris ring is switched between auto iris mode and manual iris mode, on-screen display (LCD monitor /Viewfinder) may flicker for a brief second and focus position may be reset.
- When the Iris ring is set to manual iris mode, the Lens Model and Max Aperture Value of the Exif are not recorded correctly.
- When the Exposure step of the camera is set to on 0.5 stop basis while the Iris ring of the lens steps on 0.3 stop basis, the on-screen (LCD monitor /Viewfinder) display and Exif are recorded on 0.5 stop basis, and these may be different from actual aperture value.
- When the Iris ring is set to manual iris mode, the aperture value is set at the value which Iris ring indicates regardless of exposure mode.
- When Iris ring is switched between auto iris mode and manual iris mode during movie recording, the recording will be stopped.
- If you rotate the Iris ring, the time before Power Save is not extended.
- When the Iris ring is set to manual mode, Background Defocus Control in Photo Creativity does not work correctly however the on-screen display is shown as is conventionally done.
- When the Iris ring is set to manual iris mode, aperture value is not registered correctly when you register settings by means of Memory function.
- When the autofocus mode is set to something other than AF-C and the amount of focus movement is large until the focus is achieved, sometimes the exposure is incorrect after focus is achieved. The correct exposure can be obtained by pressing the shutter button halfway again or using AEL again.
- The Exif lens name does not include the letters "GM". If you update the camera system software to Version 3.10 or higher, “GM” will be included at the end of the name.
- On standby in movie mode, and when recording movies, the lens goes into MF mode. If you update the camera system software to Version 3.10 or higher, AF will be enabled.
- In Focus mode, AF-A cannot be selected. Focal plane phase detection AF is not supported. If you update the camera system software to Version 3.10 or higher, you will be able to use AF-A and focal plane phase detection AF.
