Blazingly fast, Super-efficient, great overclocking potential

The media could not be loaded. I bought this along with several other components for a brand new custom desktop. I chose Coffee Lake as it was the newest architecture and I had heard good things about its speed and overclocking potential; also having 6 physical cores is handy! Something to note is that CPU overclocked will outperform the extreme version of it’s predecessor for single core applications (e.g. gaming) but on multicore usage you’d be better off going for the extreme edition as it offers more raw power.I tend to multitask a lot on my PC hence the need for a beefy CPU. Usually running several applications such as CAD software, games, media creation programs, and sometimes even game creation services AT THE SAME TIME is very CPU (and RAM) intensive, so I chose to go with the I7 for the extra power and speed provided. The CPU itself came properly boxed, no heat sink included which I’m glad is the norm now as the stock heat sinks that intel used to provide were never enough! Also, the inclusion of a nice little sticker was good to go on the case 😉Plugging into the motherboard was simple. Bearing in mind that your motherboard will have to support the 1151 socket for this to fit AND function. I went with a high-end board as to not bottleneck my system (see my other reviews for that item).Running tests, I am very happy. I used the built in overclocking utility in my motherboards BIOS and that managed to easily push it to 4.9Ghz which is better than I expected for automatic overclocking. The system runs stable and damn quick. I ran a Geekbench and Cinebench to test the performance of the CPU and have added the results as images. These results are from AFTER the Meltdown/Spectre mess.Even after the Meltdown and Spectre updates I haven’t noticed too big a slow down to be honest. My desktop keeps up with me well. In fact, I’m glad I went for the fastest model now to compensate for the reduction in speed across all devices.I’m so happy with this purchase, it’s worth the extra cash from an I5. If you need multitasking and speed work your budget around this. I recommend this product. Always happy with Intel.***If you found this review helpful please don't forget to mark it as helpful below, thanks!***

Is it worth upgrading?

I just upgrade "often" rather than "when needed", and indeed there really isn't much difference between my old 4790K and this CPU. I have to admit, though, that this CPU seems to be in idle mode most of the time, lol. It barely ever raises a sweat, so I am assuming it's more future proof. Part of the reason for the upgrade was more the faster RAM and the addition of NVMe support, both of which are certainly a lot faster than from the days of the 4790K. In particular the NVMe is a rocket! But is it worth it? If you want a huge boost in gaming performance and already have a 4790K or anything later then then I would continue to wait. If your current system has a lesser CPU than a 4790K then sure, it's worth it. But then you know gaming performance always had far less to do with the CPU than your GPU so always the best option is to upgrade your GPU first. I just upgrade everything now and then so it's no disappointment to me. It's a very powerful CPU.These CPU's are known to get hot if you overclock. If you buy an Asus board, they, by default, overclock the CPU, and you will need a good cooler. The 10% extra performance they get out of the CPU results in 40% more heat, so that's 140W. And that's a partial overclock. If you want to fully overclock then you need something capable of handling a lot more. However, these CPU's will overclock well. According to some, the best benefit is obtained by taking all cores to 4.8GHz

Don't judge a processor by it's packaging

The packaging felt slightly questionable quality and it was missing the "intel inside" sticker which comes as standard with Intel retail processors but the processor itself succeeded all benchmarks I ran with it and is indeed genuine.

Old now, but lasted a long while

So, this is obsolete at the point of writing this review. But the i7 no matter what generation, is a gaming powerhouse. You've got the i9 now, but the i7 will do you for most having purposes, especially if you want to keep you're costs down.

Um...It works

CPU 8700k came faster than estimate and was security sealed from factory still. Some sites and sellers will test CPU's for the best overclockers to sell at a higher price, didnt happen here.Mine does overclock to 5ghz @ 1.31V but i only did it to test the CPU.You have to be very careful of BIOS settings AUTO does not mean STOCK neither does optimized settings.Motherboards for this CPU tend to put the voltage way too high right out of the box so do a little research and set everything manually.I have mine set for 4.5ghz on all cores turbo OFF @1.15v with LLC set to level 1 and C states on, my motherboard is Asrock Fatality K6 z370.Very happy with it getting a decent overclock using voltage lower than VID.Overclocking has been a time consuming pain compared to older chips but that's only because motherboard manufacturers seem to over compensate for bad overclocking chips. If you really push your OC to 5ghz and above you will hit a thermal wall but unless your benchmarking or measuring your epeen you really dont need to push it that far.

Fast, does not disappoint!

After having an old i3-590 for so long, I decided to finally make the jump to a bigger and better processor- and with all the reviews this thing got, I can firmly say that it does not disappoint whatsoever. Installation proved a little tricky to figure out, but it wasn't really an inherent issue with the product itself, more the motherboard. Upon getting it up and running, the performance of my PC knows no limits, it even turned my GPU into a bottleneck, which amazes me. All in all, this thing is absolutely top quality and very affordable all the same. I'd absolutely recommend it for anyone wanting to make a jump.
