The screen is definitely big enough to read a book on, the only difference is a dedicated book reader doesn't have a glossy screen. This tablet does have a glossy screen, so trying to use it outside, the sun may wash it out. But if you did use it as a book reader, you'd also be able to use it as a tablet. If you were reading inside, it would probably do fine.
